hey everyone i suffer from OCD/anxiety and i have been worried sick for the past 11 months because while moving i threw out my old 40gb laptop hard drive without thinking..and have read alot about idenity theft and it just scared me sending me into a complete obsession over my personal information being found and someone finding out everything about me. ..after 11 months odds are it has been destroyed right? i would have known by now if anyone had found it. Basically i am just wondering if it could even survive being put through the trash process..it was just a small laptop hard drive outside of its case..usually if you just drop them they are toast. i also heard the trash from my town goes to the local power plant to be incincerated so the only chance it could have been found is point a to point b. What do you guys think?
I cant seem to get these thoughts out of my head and this has completely taken over my life..any help would be great i am really suffering here, i just really dont know what else to do..i am on paxil and have considered therapy but i dont know if that will even help me..

Oh gosh what a nightmare you must be living in!
Ok... first thing you do is to go to the US Federal Governments website located here:
http://www.ftc.gov/freereports
Its not a bad place but when you get to the reports - check them to see if your identity has been stolen. Only you would know once you started reading what is on your report.
Step two of being there is that there are three major company's that supply our Nation's credit reports, go to each of them individually and put a block on your name. This way, only if it is actually you can your credit be used for anything.
2.are 11 months... this depends on how your county handles these items. First, look up your former county / city online and see if they have information regarding what happens after. However, you must remember that some people who pick up the trash take things from within it home with them to restore, so doing those things spoken about above to protect your identity is a necessary for you. Because computer components do not break down well, you may find at your online county listing that they pull these and give them to the area college (who receives federal grants to clear them all) who try to reformat them to zero and then heal them to be reused.
3. I know a fella who was re-arranging things in his trunk and set his computer satchel on the ground resting against the tire. A neighbor came out and spoke to him when finished talking, as he walked past the car he hit the trunk so it would shut. I remember that bumping crunching sound as he backed over it. He said, "Can you see what that was?" well, plugging in other devises we were able to retrieve the information from that laptop but only because we knew the account access passwords.
4. Again, check with your former local collections to see WHERE the trash is taken and how it is handled.
5. Be kind to yourself - you have some work to replace your worry now.
Plentiful prayers & bountiful blessings,
Lu

I have already checked reports..no funny buisness and i have checked my city trash disposal that there is no recycling in my town, unless you personally bring it to the recycling center, other wise it is taken to the incinerator.
Also it wasnt a whole computer i threw out. Just the drive itself.
