what blood pressure reading means you need to go to the emergency room?

Yikes I don't know. What is yours? One time I was at the doctors office and was 168/113 and they made me lay down and take medication right then and there, but they didn't make me feel as though I was in immediate danger of stroking out or anything.

I had once 191/110 and they told me to lay in bed and continue the meds I was given. the other time it was 170/100 and I WAS in the er for something unrelated. They just said oh by the way your pressure is high. I said I just started taking my medication again. They did nothing about it and sent me home.

I think it depends on what symptoms (if any) you are experiencing with the High BP. If I had a pressure of 170+/100+ I would probably call my doctor and ask to get in that day - especially if it stayed there. If I had a pressure of 180/100 I'd probably go to the ER. However, I would also go to the ER if I found myself having a difficult time breathing and rapid pulse with a BP as low as 140/90 (but that also sounds a bit like a panic attack). In short - that's a hard question to answer. You might call the hospital nurse line if you need some help discerning.

My blood pressure has been as high as 220/149 when removing a tooth. Not sure what drug he shot in me to deaden it first. All he said was go to the doctor ASAP when he sent me out the door with a mouth full of gause. Last dentist visit it was 200/129 so he refused to fix my teeth anymore. Ended up at the doctor which it was 180/120 in his office he still sent me out the door with a perscription of 10mg Lisinopril which does help but comes with plenty of side effects.

In 1998, when I first started taking my blood pressure an average of seven times per day, I was getting readings like:
9/19/1998; 181/105 @ 4pm
9/20/1998; 193/126 @ 6pm
9/20/1998; 183/110 @ 9pm
9/20/1998; 191/112 @ 10pm
9/21/1998; 143/118 @ 5pm
9/22/1998; 175/118 @ 1am
9/22/1998; 184/107 @ 6pm
9/23/1998; 184/115 @ 1am
For the rest of 1998, my average blood pressure was 152/97 based on over 1000 readings, and those horrible, high blood pressure numbers stayed with me for years until I finally got my blood pressure under control, and at very healthy levels.
I never went to the hospital or the ER, or even called my cardiologist. I was already under the care of a wonderful cardiologist, and on a bunch of heart and blood pressure medications for heart failure. I just toughed it out, and tried to figure out what to do.
I was just very, very lucky that I survived. To me, the mere fact that I survived was just a luck of the draw. I guess that, in most cases, our bodies can take a lot of abuse?
For the year ending 2008, my blood pressure averaged 122.1 over 72.1 based on 2543 bp readings, and I feel 20 years younger, after YEARS of chronically high blood pressure. Lucky, lucky, LUCKY! :eek:

were you on BP meds at the time? those are horrrrible numbers. My mother used to have numbers like that for years. She was on medication all those times also.

My dr told me if my bottom number was over 110 I needed to be in the ER. I'm only 22 though, that may have had something to do with it.

110 diastolic is awfully high for a 22 year old or anyone. Definatly would go to ER if I ever saw the bottom higher than that.

No I was taking No drugs at the time. Finally gave in and went to the doctor to get some pills to lower it. My brother & sister take pills and said I needed to go they were cheap to get. I am now taking 10 mg. of Lisinopril which helps take it down but it comes with some crazy side effects. Been on it for 4 weeks now.
But when it comes to being cheap thats another story.
Doctor ordered blood work right away which turned out Ok as Im sure all he wanted to do is see what my counts were starting on it and then will order more blood work to check if the pills screw anything up. Not sure I will be able to keep going back with what they charged me with NO health insurance. 625 dollar blood work 222 for two 10 minute visits with the DR. To end up with 4 dollars worth of Walmart pills each month. He did give me a perscription for a year so I will have to see what to do at that time to get more pills. I did find a site to buy then from Canada may have to do that not sure yet.
But as far as my pressure I can tollerate my pressure at anything 110 on the low number but if you get it near 120 it was starting to take its toll on my eyes with bad pressure. Was even high during the middle of the night trying to rest.
So surely no fun now with NO JOB, NO INSURANCE, 48, wondering where do we go from here, & what the future will bring yet.
I read some of the Depression logs and things could be much worse I guess so fight on best I can.
God will show me the way im sure !!

Make sure you get follow-up bloodwork. These b/p meds are hard on one's body. Symptoms of liver damage sometimes don't show up until it's too late. Fam

I have the opposite problem. My normal BP is b/w 90/50 and 100/60! When I was in labour it went up to 120/80...the midwives didnt beleive that it was high until my obgyn walked in....LOL
