I have been going through some difficult times lately. I have gone through every test you can think of and my specialist is saying that I probably have IBS. My problem is that I cannot eat properly anymore. I am lactose, garlic, corn, preservative, whole wheat intolerant. I still have to do my fructose and sorbitol test though. I have lost between 20-24 pounds in the past 4-5 months. I hardly eat anymore because I am either experiencing extreme abdominal pains, severe bloating, and/or severe acid reflux. So, already a lot of food was cut out because of the acid reflux. Now I am told to cut out even more. All my results have come back negative, even for celiac disease. I go through a lot of pain and/or discomfort every day. I am sure that it is not IBS. I don't know what to think though. I have entered into a slight depression. I am always irritated, frustrated, very fatigued and very weak. Is there someone out there who might know something that I don't? Or who can relate with this and understand what I am going through? HELP!!!!

Even if you don’t believe it, IBS can cause all of those of which you feel especially under stress. It is the same for me, lactose intolerant and wheat as well. I have made the adjustments but haven’t noticed much of a change. If it is IBS certain foods you eat could trigger it. Have you gone on a diet to figure out what you can eat?
If you can stand it, they say don’t eat for 3 days then slowly introduce different foods into your body.. and you will find out what you can and cant handle. Also, just because you have food intolerance doesn’t mean you cant eat the food every again. A lot of people are intolerant to different levels of food.. For example, if I eat a little cheese (a piece of pizza) I will be fine but if I eat three pieces I will have stomach problems. So research a little more and you’ll find your options to not be so limited.

Hi Arzin,
I know exactly how you feel! I have not had any food allergy tests yet but have had a whole lot of other tests! Ultrasound, CT scan, Gallbladder and liver function test, Endoscopy and numerous blood tests. I will be seeing a gastroenterologist on the 27th at Mayo Clinic(maybe she will find the problem) I wish you luck in finding yours!
B-Jean
symptoms-pain moves around the abdominal area and into my back.
only diagnosed with gallbladder polyps(which doctors are unsure how to treat) and a hemangioma on my liver(which is not worriesome)

Hi B-Jean,
Thanks for responding. I have also tested positive for fructose intolerance as well as lactose and wheat intolerant. All my other tests have come back negative. I am also being tested for hypoglycemia, I tend to get light headed and faint right after eating. I am very frustrated and quite fatigued. I am doing endless amounts of blood testing and I wish someone could do just one test that will check for everything.
I am sorry to hear that you are going through almost the same thing as me if not worse. I wish you luck with your test this month. Keep me posted. I know this might sound stupid and please don't take this the wrong way but I am glad you responded to my problem, at least there is someone else out there who is going through the almost the same thing. At least I know that I am not alone. Do you also have the problem of staying away from certain foods?

I'm new to this board so please forgive me if this has already been said but I found that MSG (monosodium glutamate) brings on violent bouts of cramping and diahrrea. Many canned and pre-packaged foods contain MSG so I have to read all labels before buying anything but it has paid off in a big way. I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago but have found that my symptoms have all but disappeared since eliminating MSG from my diet.

I am a 40 year old female. I had lower and upper right abdominal pain for over 2 years, accompanied by constipation, excessive bloating, gas, worsened by exercise. Undiagnosed after several doctors and tests. I figured out on my own that the major problem was eating beef...so I stay away from it. It has made a big difference and my quality of life is much better now. If you eat beef you may want to try giving it up and see what happens. Good luck!

I don't have problems with beef. My killer meat is pork.
I don't have problems staying away from foods that irritate my IBS (except coffee--but it doesn't cause me that much grief when I do drink it, & that's a rarity) I have problems avoiding the other foods I'm supposed to stay away from (there's a bunch--but not common stuff like lactose & wheat & junk) because some of the stuff gets mixed into food & I don't know about it until it's too late. Good thing I like to cook.

I have taken the advice from this board and had metamucil cookies and/or drinks for 1 week now. I have had no D since! I was a little constipated (odd) at first but basically every bathroom experience has been great. I had some worries..must have eaten some trigger foods once last weekend and once this weekend...and had some severe stomach cramps, gas, and heartburn...was sure I was going to be violently ill as usual, but alas...I rode it out and never got sick. I woke up the next day with no problems whatsoever (usually if I escaped an episode the night before, breakfast was sure to bring it on full force). I have had IBS since I was 10 (some months better than others) but this metamucil is the best thing I've found so far. I still don't eat heavy dairy products like cream, but can't give up cheese. Greasy foods are a trigger as well. Anyway..good luck. There is hope.

All meats except chicken and fish are not good for people with IBS. The most important thing to stay away from, though, is fatty foods. Fat wreaks havoc on the digestive track of a person with IBS. You shouldn't drink soda, either. I have followed certain IBS diets in the past, but I have found that I really have to find out on my own what I can and can't eat and create my own specialized diet. Everyone is different!

I was just wondering if you have gotten the food intolerance tests done? If so you should get food allergies test done. I've read many books where they said that the food intolerance test used to be very popular but then they found out it wasn’t very accurate since someone always had more than one intolerance.
I could have false information but I have read many books.. or you may want to be re-tested for food allergies. Not to mention if you have intolerance you can still eat the foods just in moderation. Example; eat lactose one day then go without the next day.. and so forth.. (you should be fine that way) Unless you are truly allegric to them. You should look up food intolerance testing on the web and see what u find. It isnt all its supposed to be.

I do not necessarily get sick from red meat. I loooooove it! I am so sick of chicken. I eat my share of chicken and fish, but I want beef and pork as well. There is nothing like a potroast, steak, hamburger, or roasted pork! I agree that fat can trigger IBS, but some of these meats, if you cook them properly, then dab off the grease (don't eat any fatty portions) could be eaten...perhaps not by everybody. I will say that Morningstar has some good tasting fake beef (soy) products, however. If you haven't tried that brand, you should.

Ugh!! SOY--Retch!! I'm all about the actual meat in my meat thanks!!
Anyway, I eat beef all the time with no problems. I got a little ill when I started eating it again about 7-8 years ago (I used to be what's referred to as a "poultry vegetarian"), but that was it. I took the "dive right into a cheesesteak approach"--obviously not the way to go!
If you're concerned about the fat content, I suggest finding some game. Deer meat, for example is very low in fat & high in protein. I live in NE PA. We have tons of game up here & I eat it as often as I can. I also enjoy odd things like alligator & such.
I'm all about the red meat!! It's pork that makes me sick (as I mentioned before) & there's really nothing wrong with red meat. You need a certain amount in your diet anyway, I think, to be completely healthy & when you're on your monthly, it's great for that--it always makes me feel so much better.

I know they're supposedly great. My sister swears by them. I just have a problem with the fact that it's not meat--but it looks like meat. It's just wrong!
I seriously love real meat though & I'm ok with that. It's kind of a good thing that I'd never buy soy anything for here anyway--besides the fact that every soy product I've ever had tasted like dirt--I'd be afraid my b/f would grab it & cook it up to eat without looking. (He's allergic to soy)
This has happened before with a few guys I've dated. I think it's a guy thing. ex: "Honey this chicken is awesome!!" "That's because it's turkey!"
Now, you'd think-wouldn't he taste the difference? No, he doesn't chew food. He eats like a jackal.

yeah, if he's allergic, I wouldn't want to have that in the house either! My husband is the same way...inhales his food and thinks all food is the same...good!
