I have recently re- read Strong Women, Strong Bones-by Miriam Nelson Ph.D. Dr. Nelson is with the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. I like the book alot, it includes some very practical information about how we can help our bone health. It has a very good section on setting up an exercise, strength training and balance program and how to advance it .I find it motivational. I won't go into the exercise plan, but there are two bits of information that I found interesting and perhaps useful for others:
Measure your height in the morning. That's the time of day you're tallest:the tug of gravity makes you up to half an inch shorter by evening.
Unless we take vitamin D supplements, our bone density changes with the season.....Bone density reaches its annual peak after the summer....We reach our annual low in the spring. ...The difference between high and low points can amount to 3 to 4 percent. That's why it's very important to consistently schedule bone density tests for the same time of the year.
I have often wondered about the changeability of my height at the drs. office- maybe it is the gravity thing . Probably the second point is obvious to most, but it is something to consider when scheduling dexas and comparing your dexa results.

Thanks for the information. I hadn't thought about the time of year when the DEXA is scheduled. In some places where the sun is out basically year round, the Vit D thing isn't too pronounced. But where the seasons change and there's definitely a winter and a summer it probably would effect people more.
It seems like I'm taller later in the day after I've stretched out as far as in spine/back exercises. Thanks for recommendation on the book.

Hi OB, how have you been? Thanks for the info. Living where we have definite seasons i'm diligent to take enough D thru out the year. The sun here has been on vacation most of the winter, so that source has been limited. I've had both DEXAS in the summer and have another one coming this July.
The private message feature is now up on the board, would it be ok to add both of you? You can add me to yours if you like. I'm curious to see how it works. There are so many good people here that i'd like to know them not only by their bone condition, but as people to. take care...phyllis

Hi Osteo. That book was one of the first I read when I was diagnosed, and I also found it very encouraging I liked it alot, and I think I still do a few of the exercises from that book.

Phyllis- Hi hope you are doing well. In Oct. I had a fall while out walking, and somewhat injured my wrist(I feared serious-but it was just a sprain apparently) and knee. I had to lay off weight lifting for about 8 wks. and even the walking had to lighten up for a bit . Now I am back to all the good stuff and my weight lifting is 1 pound off where I was before the incident. I am very motivated now.
Sometimes I get on the treadmill later in the day, but after reading about the daily shrinkage/compression, I am going to try to be done with all my ex. by mid afternoon--hey I better get on with it now:) Maybe later in the day is best for stretching .
