I just had another bone scan after 6 years. I have been on HRT and Miacalcin, daily walking, light weights at the gym, Vitamin D and Calcium Supplementation. So anyway, I lost bone density in my spine, but gained bone density in both femurs. Femurs went from 76% to 80% and spine went from 94% to 88% in the six year period. I have osteopenia T scores in all locations.
My GP insists I take a bisphosponate and I have declined. Of course, I have been warned about the HRT risks but feel that any other drug is just as bad. I cannot tolerate the bisphosphate types and scared of Evista as well.
I actually expected much worse bone loss in the six year period but really don't know what to do about the HRT. What a mess!! Any comments appreciated regarding the HRT quandry.

It sounds like you've done pretty good keeping your bone loss to a minimum. I can't give you any recommendation on HRT, all I know is that I'm not using it or bisphosphonates.

His recommendation seems (to me) like overkill for Osteopenia.

I think his recommendations sound like overkill too. I have osteopenia and am doing strength trainining, healthy diet, and good supplementation along with strontium. If I ever go the HRT route I will do bio-identicals but I'm not quite there yet. Hugs - jan

HI blondgal... did you ask your dr. why he was so adamant about offering you drugs when you are still in the osteopenia range? i know dr. are supposed to offer "fixes" for things they think need fixed, but at this time it seems a bit premature especially since you can't take the drugs. Is he aware of that? Have you done any research about strontium? Its a natural supplement some of us here are taking with nice results. take care..phyllis

Hi Phyllis, Yes, I have started on the Strontium Citrate after reading here. I've only been on it about 5 days so I'm hoping for something positive from it.
I am scared about the Fosamax and do not understand why I was put on it back in 2002 when I was barely, barely osteopenic (??) With all due respect to the field of medicine, I felt like Fosamax was burning my guts out (to put it bluntly.) I was on it 3 months before giving it up. At this time, it is not an option..period and I don't know why drs push it so adamantly. I agree about overkill in this instance as others of you mentioned.

Hi again...I took actenol a couple of months before deciding it wasn't right for me. I've been taking strontium for almost 3 years. I had a DEXA after 9 months use and did see improvements, so give it time to do its job. Like i said before there are several of us taking it here so if you have questions please ask. Welcome to the "out of the box" bone builders club. take care..phyllis

I say the best thing for bones is exercise, and bone strengthening(light weights). But you have to be diligent . Exercise has changed my life in so many ways. And I am 59. Menopause was the pits, hot flashes, no sleep. Exercise changed all that. It even had an effect on my libido(is that the right word). I feel like my young self again, without biodentical, biophosphates, bio anything. I say exercise as much as you can, no matter what your age. If you can't stand , sit in a chair and lift light weights. When you stop moving, your body fails. I sailed through my treatments for breast cancer, no sickness, no depression. I credit all this to exercising. And oh yes I had a dexa in 2006 that said I had severe osteoporosis. Dec. 2008 another dexa-no longer have osteoporosis. I am now osteopenic. With a 10.6% Increase in the spine, and 8.9% increase in the hip. I'm going for the gold , with my vitamins, healthy diet, strontium citrate, and exercise, exercise.I hardly ever ever worry, because I keep busy, and do things I love to do.
