I'm posting on the kidney board, but it could be the menopause (don't worry, I'm happy), the medication board, the stroke board...the old chick board ?

Today, my 14 year old son and I were in the grocery store, and he said "Mom, your hair is dead".

He is so right ! It's downright awful.

We live in San Diego, where our climate is coastal desert...dry as a bone. It's sunny every darn day, so it's fried from the sun. I have survived kidney failure, and 4 hypertensive strokes, and I will always take a lot of medications. It is very fine, and light in texture.

Any ideas ?

Im not sure im not good with hair, maybe something like hte light oils/moisturizers that u can apply when your hair is dry? Walmart has some
or maybe go to a store that has alot of hair products and ask them what would be good for hair. Im sorry Im not help

I lived in San Diego before miramar was a marine base, when it was a navy base, I went to high school at scripps ranch

Your son is very observant and funny!

I think aging contributes to changes in quantity and quality of hair at least a little bit. As we hit late 40's, our bodies undergo many hormonal changes. Our kidneys don't function as well as they once used to. The toxins (medications) we take daily do a number on our metabolism and alter absorption of nutrients. The weather does the rest. Even though our climate here is different from yours, many women face similar hair issues. I find that using fewer chemicals (=little or no hairspray) makes a difference. Also, I use hair-dryer less frequently. I get deep conditioning every couple of months at the salon. All this adds up to healthy looking hair. It used to be dry and brittle with many split ends. I agree that some of our medications do not promote good hair growth.

Thanks,

I think keeping the ends trimmed off, and treating myself to some deep conditioning is in order. I'll try a scarecrow hairdo, and put some patches on my jeans!

That's an interesting question, writeleft - it raises the question if "toxins" are playing a role here. i would recommend taking a kidney specific multivitamin (specific for CKD 1-4, not dialysis)- couldn't hurt. Make sure you get your thyroid function tested too.

Thank you...My nephrologist suggested CoQ10, and I have been taking that for about a year...hate to imagine what it might look like without it. I have been too busy keeping my health, than to spend much time worrying about my hair.

About the thyroid function, that I will re-check. I do have lab work done every 4 weeks, so that should be easy to find out.

I appreciate all you suggestions. I really am just happy to be alive, dead hair or not!
