Ok, My mother is only 54 years old, she has abused laxatives for 8 years. SHe is also somewhat mentally ill & has never listened to reason, this is another topic altogether, but now she has this MAJOR bowel problem that the Doctors want to treat, she keeps telling me she will be stuck at home for 8 months in recovery, (she lives to walk) I suspect she is exagerating about the length of recovery time. Her bowels are like Liquid & explosive. In the mornings, she has to stay home until almost afternoon so she can 'drain" them so to speak, this is only getting worse, and she would rather die than get this operation, whatever it is. What do you do with someone who refuses treatment? I am just at my wits end, she brought this problem all on herself, and now she wants to die because of it. I really don't even know what this condition is. I don't think the Doctor has seen anything this severe because most people don't take laxatives for 8 years straight. I warned her and warned her back then, to no avail. If anyone knows anything about anything similar to this, please post! Thank You

Try to switch her over to Metamucil. It's says it's a natural fiber laxative on the container but it'll control diarrhea as well as constipation. It's safe to use daily but make sure she drinks enough water with it.

It use to say on the container bowel regulator--- it is a stool forming agent.
