ok, heres my problem i have had an infection for a year since i had my son, been on 15 different antibiotics i have ibs now and everytime i have to take another antibiotic i get EXTREME bouts of diarhea which just happened with levaquin so i stopped taking it but i still have alittle diarhea, i went last night and bought acidophilus pills i am supposed to take 2 a day w/ meals will this help me, i have heard that they dont work and i really hope that they will replenish some of my bacteria??

They will help you if they are good quality probiotics. It is really the only efficient way to replenish your good bacteria, yogurt does not have enough to do the job. Don't panic, just try it.

Yes, Acidophilus does work, but no, I would take it on an empty stomach, so that it does not get destroyed by stomach acid whilst eating. Keep it in the fridge also.

Can I ask why you have taken so many antibiotics? It is most certainly this that is causing all your problems and it sets up a viscious circle that you can't get out of. The more antibiotics you take, the more it kills off your good bacteria and the lower your immune system becomes so the more susceptible you are to infection and so more infection just leads to more antibiotics and so you have this viscious circle going round and round. You need to try and break it.

Antibiotics also suppress symptoms rather than curing and there are more natural methods rather than using antibiotics.

I would also suggest that you take some echinacea tincture for a while to help boost your immune system. At present, Vitamin C would probably make your diarrhea worse.

supersarah, i have taken all these antibiotics because i have had a uterine/cervical infection from my c-section because i had non disolvable sutures that have been retained in me and keep working there way down through my cervix, i have had a d&c done and there still are sutures in me so doc just keeps giving me tons of antibiotics to try to kill the infection, i know that this wont get rid of my problem until all the sutures are removed but they dont want to do another d&c because it can damage my uterus but i am at the point where i am seriously considering asking them to just do a hysterectomy!!!! So i have been on 15 different types of antibiotics and this last week i was on levaquin and i told my doc i kept getting diarhea and she said that antibiotics wont cause diarhea, lol..... i know thats not true!! So this is my big problem i have had for a year.
