What does shrinking kidneys mean? What causes this? What can one do about it?

My urologist told me that when kidneys shrink its usually kidney disease
i dont know tho did your dr tell u that your kidneys were shrinking??

It is my mom who has been told she has this problem. I am looking for some information for her. She is 76 years old. She does have some other health problems. She rescently found out she is diabedic.She did get a few bladder infections lately. I think that's what made her Dr. send her to a specialist. I wish my mother would ask more questions at her visits, but she doesn't.
