Just a question but is there anything useful for a schizophrenic? I've heard of orthomolecular psychiatry but haven't gotten into to much deal about it because my family is like drugs are the way to go but in my opinion drugs don't cure your illness they just act like a band aid.

I would look into Chinese Medicine. I studied it for about 2 years before I ran out of money and had to discontinue. They consider mental illness a stagnation of the shen (the spirit) so they use shen-clearing herbs for mental illness. I am actually using a Chinese formula now for rage due to menopause and the paper that is included in the box says it treats schizophrenia and hallucinations as well. It's called Chai Hu Long Gu Mu Li Pian. I would consult a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, though, to discuss it. Good luck. I feel sorry for people who suffer from these kinds of illnesses because it's a living hell. I wish there was something to really cure these people.

You said: "in my opinion drugs don't cure your illness"...there isn't anything that CURES Schizophrenia and have not heard of anything natural.

I know there is no cure I'm just saying that if drugs do work whjich they only work partially they act only like a band aid.

I know what you mean. My late brother was diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic when he was 17, back in 1978. Back then, I believe he was put on a strong dose of lithium. When he took the meds, he was literally like a zombie. You couldn't even have a conversation with him. Yet when he didn't take it, of course, he was paranoid and delusional. There was no in between. I've heard the medications of today aren't much better. I have a friend with schizo affective disorder. I saw the movie 'A Beautiful Mind' a few years back and I thought of my brother and just cried. It saddens me that after all this time, science hasn't came up with better medications. True, we've came a long way from shock therapy. However, we still have a long way to go. The mind is a very complex thing. Heck, they can't even come up with a way to treat depression and anxiety without taking away one's sex drive. Yes, there's Wellbutrin, but that makes many people irritable, and who wants to have sex with a crabby person? Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for any natural remedies. I will say that I was reading recently that alcohol and drugs make schizophrenia worse. Unfortunately, though, these people are at high risk for self-medicating with these substances. My brother used drugs rather heavily when he was younger. Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts on the matter. I'll be following this thread closely and I'm looking forward to the responses you get. Take care.

I don't know of anything alternative for schizophrenia. I know fish oil caps and something else is recommended. My brother is schizophrenic, he has been on the rispirdol constra shot every 2 wks. He has gained weight on it but no delusions. He doesn't mind getting the shot either.

So far I've learned that vitmain B3 complex vitamins are essential a schizophrenic along with omega 3 vitamins. I've also learned that seeing an orthomolecular psychiatrist is one way to find out about alternative ways to treat schizophrenia.

i personally believe there is a cure for everything. i would check out the work of dr. hulda clark, and see if it is for you. i can't confirm that her approach works, but you could decide for your self.

i have had many experiences where what i eat acts as a trigger toward my depression, physical symptoms. if you can be off meds for a while, i would take a few weeks to a month and write down EVERYTHING you eat breakfast lunch and dinner. after a week you'll get used to doing this;)

then at the end of each day, see if there is a correlation between your symptoms, or episodes and circle foods that you eat on those days or the day before and see if there is a pattern (and foods that are always there when you have symptoms). the amount of junk in our foods is unbelievable.

this is something you might want to try. in addition to everything else.
its worth a try.
good luck ;)

I have also read there have been some studies on using omega 3 fatty acids to promote some improvement in schizophrenia. Omega 3s are in the fish oil capsules, as was mentioned. Also fatty fish, such as salmon and mackeral.
Walnuts and flax seed (be sure it's already ground) have a substance that converts to omega 3s. - You can use flaxseed sprinkled over cereal, yogurt or any soft food.

the omega 3s might be worth a try, to support other natural remedies you are trying plus your meds.

see if you can find literature by a Dr Carl? Pfeiffer (unsure of first name sorry) who wrote about 3 different schizophrenic types - histapenic (?low histamine), histadelic (high histamine?) and pyroluric. He suggests different supplemental therapies for each. B3 is certainly in there but there are other things as well. good luck in your search for answers.

Drs. Carl Pfeiffer and Adam Hoffer both have done extensive research on treating schizophrenics with high doses of B vitamins. The Pfeiffer treatment center has been an invaluable resource for treating my daughter's anxiety, depression and mood disorder, and I highlly recommend their treatment protocol. Health Recovery Center does much of the same work. Good luck!!

Yah I've read up on alot of Hoffer material and his studies using the orthomolecular approach. If only this approach had the multi-billion dollar funding that the drug companies have.

well, you pretty much answered your own question (the original title of the post).

I have also read up on natural treatments/cures for schizophrenia, as I have it myself as well, and started on a treatment plan 9 months ago. I have come a long way since then and am much more functional than I used to be.

the naturopathic treatment plan that I made for myself was basically a very strict diet. I completely eliminated all dairy, gluten and refined sugars. I also completely eliminated all processed foods as well. I also added in plenty of green leafy and green non-leafy vegetables, fruit, vegan protein sources (complete proteins btw) such as dried spirulina seaweed, ground flaxseed, brown rice and oat bran, and water (the only beverage I ever drink is water).

my current diet is as follows:

vegetables (dark green leafy and dark green non-leafy, and occasionally some other-colored vegetables as well)
fruit (mainly oranges and bananas)
dried spirulina seaweed(provides about 25 grams of complete protein for each serving that I have)
ground flaxseed(an excellent source of magnesium and other minerals, as well as a powerhouse of omega-3 fatty acids)
brown rice (I eat this for a source of complex carbohydrates)
oat bran (a good source of omega-6 fatty acids, and probably omega-9 and other omega's as well)
water (the single most important thing the body can ever ingest)

the OP is absolutely right; drugs do not cure any illnesses. they only mask the symptoms. there are natural cures for schizophrenia as well as every mental illness that there is; it is called naturopathy. orhomolecular works as well.

I've had good results with my naturopathic doctor (ND). I feel I have a ways to go still but the worst symptoms of my own mental illness have been dealt with. In my case the diagnosis (which I'm not 100% satisfied is accurate) is bi-polar not schizophrenia.

Unfortunately, a lot of insurance will not cover such services and the prescribed items.
