hello. For those of you that take Trazadone (for insomnia), how much do you take to help with your sleep? My dr. said to try the 50mg and if that does not work go up to 100 mg and I tried that last night and it did help me relax but I was still not sleepy! Any ideas.? Thank you!!!! This sleep issue is trying to ruin my life!!! but I will not let it!!!!!!:)

I take 50 mg. It doesn't make me fall asleep; it just helps turn my brain off for a while so I can go to sleep. I think it takes a while to get used to the meds. The first night I took it, it took a few hours for me to fall asleep. Usually, it takes 1-2 hours for it to kick in, at least for me.

why trazadone? try a different medication for sleep. any benzo derivative will help i guess but then you need to increase and increase the dose. lyrica also suppose to promote sleep, it just stopped working for me. my doc increased my lyrica dose i'm now on 150mg...it still doesn't work. without sleep i just cannot function.

I will try the Trazadone and hope it helps. If not I will ask the dr. about Lyrica. I tried for months to not take anything for sleep except some melatonin now and then. It did not work. I am just nervous about having to take a med for sleep every night! I am only 40 and just can't see myself still having to be on sleep meds when I am 60!!! Then I worry that I will find something that works and I depend on it and then it stops working!!! Right now I have a 5 year old and I decided to heck with it, I will try the meds because I would rather take a pill then fall asleep during the day and be late picking my son up from pre-k ( has happened twice already). What is the best way to not get a tolerance to the med..at least for awhile? Maybe I should try taking it every other night and see what happens?! Thanks all

Some time ago I was prescribed temazepam for my insomnia and
it worked well for me, but after awhile the daytime after effects
bothered me too much so a different doctor prescribed ambien
which was designed for insomnia relief (unlike many for which
sleep is a side effect). I used it sparingly and now I fall asleep
easily without medication. Things change, luckily. But not always
for the better.

I was told I could take 50 mgs to 150 mgs. I tried all 3 doses and I found out 100 works best for me. 50 wasn't enough and 150 made me too tired the next day. If you can take Trazodone it is good. My doctor says it's a mild prescription.

Thanks for everyone's replies. F or the past 2 nights my trazadone dose has made me sleep (100mg). I (for whatever odd reason), seem to build up a tolerance to sleep meds quickly so I hope this 100 mg dose keeps working!!:)

I am prescribed Trazadone for another reason, rather than insomnia. This is the first post I've actually read about typical dosages of Trazadone, when used for insomnia.

I have taken 300 mg of Trazadone each night for at least 5 years, while battling malignant hypertension. I have recently reduced my dosage to 150 mg., as my hypertension control, and kidney function have become more stable.

No wonder I've been asleep for so long. I've had to stay asleep, and while I have been sleeping...I have regained so much brain function. Being that the Trazadone is non-addictive, I am just realizing how much I have gained from this drug.

So, another use of this drug is to help people recover from brain injury...How interesting. I typically sleep 14-16 hours a day, but I truly love the other hours that I am awake. I am so lucky to have a family that has allowed me the luxury of sleep, and the chance to heal.

Trazodone is typically prescribed so people aren't given those benzo's that are highly addictive and highly tolerated to the body.... if you can avoid the addict drugs... please do so... anyone saying you shouldn't do conservative therapy first, obviously love their drugs waaaaaay too much.
I have trazodone, I take 150 a night, but I've been on it for a couple years.... in addition I do have Sonata on nights that the traz doesn't seem to help... just know this isn't a sleep therapy drug, it's main side effect is sleep though and it isn't addictive. Some nights it won't' help, especially if you are forced to be up after you've taken it... (IE think child who wakes up sick and you have to take care of them....). You may find you need to up the dose again, but it's about finding your niche... and sometimes it's not with traz.... good to hear it helped the last couple nights.... happy dreaming!:)

I've been on Ambian, and then Ambian CR, both only kept me asleep continuously for about 4 hours at night, I'm recovering from an auto accident, and have ADHD, and am staying with family that is loud and in a cold house, the conditions are so that I need to stay or be on something to sleep better and tune out sound/light, I'm going to ask my Dr. to shift me to a 100 trazadone, I think I tried to use it once or twice before and maybe it was only a 50 and didn't always help me sleep very soundly. But The Ambian just wakes me up the moment is wears off and CR isn't different. I would rather have something less expensive I can buy longer-term for ADHD sensitivity, and then after the accident treatment, I can pay for it myself anyway.

Do you know anything about the half-life and how long it works in the body as compared to Ambian, or a true short-acting sleep aid?

I don't think Trazadone would work long term for a person like me, it ADHD, and ho is a very light sleeper. Can you tell me more about sonata and if it lasts longer before waking you up? I'm thinking here'shas to be something thta's long acting or on a CR that sucessfully keeps people asleep a real 8 hours!

In my case, Trazadone caused the palms of myhands to feel like they were burning in the last couple of hours I was stll trying to sleep it off/1
