Hey ladies, I have a long overdue "womens exam" scheduled for March 4, and I'm really dreading it. What can I do to make it less stressful and less painful? I know I sound like a baby, but the speculum is usually very painful to me. I ask for a smaller one and extra lubricant, but it can still be rough. Any tips or suggestions?

Take a valium. Seriously - lots of women do.

The pap is very quick and was not too bad for me, but my gyn is female and knows how to ease the misery of a pap. Maybe taking something to ease your nerves will help.

HI,

Can you just buy Valium in America? We don't have that option here - the only thing you can get without prescription is a measly paracetemol. I loathe the gynae exams too but I just try to clear my mind and not let the worries take over beforehand - then during the exam I do my labour breathing!!!! Deep breathing really does help you to focus away from the indignity and the discomfort.

Isn't it rubbish being a woman sometimes? We're all on the same side though on this x x x

Good luck x x x

You need a prescription to get Valium in the US. I do have some Ativan I can take (prescribed). I'll try the deep breathing. The speculum is what kills me, not the rest of the exam. Thanks for your suggestions!

I survived The Dreaded Pap! I was seeing a new doctor so I was a little nervous. The nurse laid out the medium size speculum and when the doctor came in I asked if she would consider using the small one. To my surprise she did! She also told me to scooch way down on the table so my hips were almost hanging off the edge. She said that helps...and it did. Thanks for all of your wisdom, encouragement and humor!

Good for you! The small definitely makes a difference, so no reason they can't try that first. Now that I have survived my experience I will tell my Dr. to start with the small. I'm not sure loud screams coming from the exam rooms is good for waiting patients
