Hello. I'm am looking for some experiences of the non-hormone IUD as I was thinking of having one. I've been to see my family planning nurse and this was found to be the best option for me as hormones don't agree with me. Having done a little bit of research online i'm now terrified as all I can find are horror stories? Is it all bad??

Three of my friends were either IUD babies or have conceived while being on a non hormone IUD. My sister has one and has had VERY painful periods ever since she had it put in. She has to take prescription pain killers when her period comes. So, I haven't heard any greatly positive stories either.
What kind of horror stories have you heard?

The IUD is EXTREMELY effective at preventing pregnancy. However, after 13 months of having the paragard, I had mine removed because of heavy cramping and LONG periods (7-8 days). The mirena does have hormones, but they're so low, it's a much better option.

Thanks for your replies. Thats pretty much what I've heard about it, heavier, longer and more painful periods. I was just hoping someone would say it brilliant and has no side effects. Hmm, I think i'm having second thoughts :(

Ok, I know this is an older post, so not sure if you will read it. I had the Mirena, and ended up having it removed and switching to the Paragard (non-hormone). I am very happy with it so far has been almost a year. My periods are heavier but not any longer and no horrible cramps, just some mild ones-same as I have always had. So not all stories are horror stories, my horror story was with the Mirena, but that's a whole other post.
Just follow your instincts and if you aren't happy with what you choose, try something else.

I agree with niknak. I've had the non-hormonal IUD twice. The first time it was after our 2nd child. Only had it removed b/c we wanted to try for another. No horrible cramps. The bleeding was only slightly heavier on the
1st-2nd day. Had the second one placed after we decided we were done having children. Same thing about the cramps/bleeding. No problems here. I've worked with gals that have had the IUD (non-hormonal and mirena) and they haven't had problems either. Good luck in your decision.
