confused colon

Hi there,
I just ran into this web site and i am hoping to get some q's answered by people who may understand what i am going through...
History:
I am a 23 year old female that has suffered from severve constipation for over 20+ years. :x For the past 5+ years I have relied on high doses of laxatives and herbal teas to have a BM. The pills and the teas sometimes are worst than the constipation. I am always bloated, stomach turing, and sometimes nauseated. I have complained for years about this to doctors but no one would take it seriously until I went head to head with my insurance. A dr. ended up performing a colonoscopy (with was supposed to be a lower exam) and I ended up with a tear in my intestines, and went on antibiotics and pain medication with opiods that just made me worst and I ended up in the hospital (sorry to be talking so much). After a complaint the head of the GI department agreed to see me, and had me take a sitz (SP?) marker study wich showed increased transit time in my colon, and the markers not moving out. She suggested 3 options:
1- to take laxatives (such as myralax) for the rest of my life
2- a 4 week period of antibiotics
3- surgery to remove my colon

With all the problems that I have had I am leaning towards the surgery, but you know the way insurances operate!!! So I will be taking to antibiotics for 4 weeks. She wanted me to wait and see how that went and then have some sort of rectal M? test. I pushed to have it now (they are just being cheap because they have to refer me a larger hospital) so the referal is put in for that...
I guess I am wondering...
1- How people have dealt with this and what these antibiotics are?
2- And what experiences or complications or benefits people have had with this surgery?
Thank you for taking the time to hear me blab...
~H

I think you need to see a new group of doctors--- the ones you're seeing have not given you good treatment. There has got to be more alternatives???

Wow! Our symptoms are so similar! I'm 23 and have dealt with constipation since I was at least 11. Bowel movements were always one week apart. I've also had soooo many stomach pains. Severe, sharp pains with gas and bloating. I just got diagnosed with IBS (I never bothered to tell a doctor about my symptoms till now). Zelnorm is horrible. It sounds like you are going through hell. I hope you find good help. I've always heard to keep surgery as the last option. Good luck!

I am really sorry to hear about your problems as I know how much they suck!!! My doctor will not put me on zelnorm since she says that there is not enough info. about it, and i would be like a lab rat. That is why i am on the antibiotics. i have a feeling that surgery is what is going to happen. To be honest i am tiered of the pain, gas cramps, bloated stomach, weight gain and all the other stuff. She says the only thing that I might suffer from after will be diariah...WOOOHOOO!!! After all these years I am just fine with that...
