Hi Hilary,
The only really sure way to know if you have IBS or not is to have tests done. IBS symptoms are the same as symtoms for other diseases and disorders. Talk to your doctor about blood work, colonoscopy and/or barium enema to rule out other possible problems. The only people that can accurately diagnose IBS is a doctor. Good luck to you.

HI
For me it was these things I would call "stomach aches" that I seemed to be getting at more frequencey and couldn't control. I always brushed it off as something I ate, or stress or whatever. It always seemed better in the morning so I figured it was all in my head. After years of this, I finally went to a doctor about it. She asked if I had alternating constipation and diarrea. I said I didn't think so, but thats because I never paid attention. After that, I did notice that was true. But for me the biggest thing is the pain in the gut. spasm, gurgling, bloating pain.
It was a little embarressing at the doctors but just getting the diagnosis for sure helped me to work toward healing.
good luck
