I have been experiencing pain behind my left eye. It is worse when I look into the light or move my eye around too much. I haven't had a diagnosis of ms yet but symptoms persist. Just wondering if this is typical and how long it might persist. This is my second bout of this. The first time it went away on its own, but lasted about 3weeks and was extremely annoying.
Thanks in advance for and advice

lild4, if MS is suspected, I would strongly suggest you getting to an ophthalmologist right away. (In a perfect world, a NEURO-ophthalmologist but to start out, a regular ophthalmologist will do -- I know that it's not always to see an N.O.) What you're describing is very much how a textbook case of Optic Neuritis can start -- pain behind the eye and worse upon movement. ON is very closely associated with MS and can often be a fast route to a dx. (In my case, that's exactly what happened.) I'm not saying it IS ON but I strongly suggest you get it checked out ASAP.

I get pain in my eye that is light related. I have been wearing sunglasses since the first pain affected me. The sunglasses are not perfect, but they do help over 90% of the time. On really bad occasions my right eye shuts and will not open.

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could describe the eye pain associated with ON. Does it feel like eye strain when you are tired? Is it kind of a stretching pulling type pain when you move your eye to the left or right?

For me, the pain varies. Most of my pain is at the back of my eye and is either really painful, radiating pain or pressure. The worst is the pain that radiates because it spreads to the rest of my "noggin". I think that each person experiences it differently.
I use acupressure where the pain radiates and I am usually able to stop it from spreading. Cold compresses can also help.
My Japanese MS friend has no eye pain, just loss of vision that comes and goes.
I hope this helps.

Hi Jayhawk, thanks for responding. Is the pain/pressure at the back of your eye at your temple? Sometimes like the whole eye socket?

I have eye pain that just shows up! Always in my right eye, I move my eye and realize it hurts when I do that! So I do it again just to make sure. Yep! Still hurts when I do that. I don't know what it is. It goes as fast as it comes. If it lasts, I would get your eyes checked and/or see your doctor.

Hi Jayhawk, thanks for responding. Is the pain/pressure at the back of your eye at your temple? Sometimes like the whole eye socket?
It "feels" like it is in the back of my eye at a point parallel to my temple. When I use acupressure at that point I relieve my pain about 90% of the time. I have never reached the point where the pain takes over the whole socket. As soon as it starts to radiate, I use the acupressure.:angel:

Hi,
I get pain behind my left eye and it often feels tired. I also get a dark floating spot in this eye. Wearing sunglasses does help a lot with the light sensitivity.
Does anyone know which tests the optician does to find evidence of ON? I recently had an eye test as I am slightly long sighted, but apart from needing slightly stronger glasses everything else was fine. I've also had an evoked potential test which was fine although I did find the test much more difficult with my left eye.
Thanks
;)

Eye pain can be caused by lots of factors and its best to have an eye test by your eyecare professional. I used to also get eye floaters and they are usually not serios but sometimes they can indicate retinal detachement which means that the back of the eye is loosing a connection with the nerve which goes to the brain. Please dont get get scared because this is highly unlikely. In your case it may be due to over straining your eyes. Do you use a computer a lot? or do your eyes also feel tired???? my advice is--see a professional and dont panic. all the best

i have been having eye pain for 2 weeks on the right eye in the corner. No vision change or anything just pain. today i went to Dr Optho and my eye pressure was 25 and potentially could get glaucoma in long run. Had pictures clicked on cornea and inside of the eye. Everything checks okay.
SO she started me on Xalatan drops to reduce the pressure. The pressure in the eye could cause eye pain so I am wait and watch.
DO you have glaucoma?

I also have pain behind my right eye. I have not been diagnosed with MS yet, but having MRI of head and lumbar and Evoked Potentials tomorrow. Yesterday morning, I was sitting here reading and all of the sudden it was like the lights were going on and off. I did this for about 4 minutes and it was at a constant speed. I actually walked outside to make sure it was not the lights flashing off and on due to power loss! After this happened, I called an opthamologist in town and told them I was being evaluated for MS and about this new sx. They told me to come right in. After waiting 2 hours in the waiting room, they put drops in my eyes to dilate them and shined a light in my eyes for about 2 seconds each and told me these symptoms are migraine related. Come back in a week if it doesnt get better. (I did not even have a headache and have not had for a week!) Has anyone else ever had this happen??

I have found that my right eye has become sensitive to certain light. I wear polarized sunglasses most of the time. Being "in the dark" has helped ;) On the flip side, my night vision is great in my right eye.
