Well what you can be absolutely sure of is that they will not be taking away any healthy part. If you know where your diverticulitis is situated that should answer your question.

Diverticulitis usually occurs in the sigmoid colon which is the last 1/3 of the colon. But, usually the only part that is surgically removed is the part that is chronically infected and not the entire sigmoid colon.
