Not so much what it can do to your immune system, but what HPV can do when your immune system is weakened. HPV itself is NOT a disease of the immune system, but what has been shown is that an immune system in a weakened state from bad dietary habits, poor lifestyle choices, other diseases, or recent infections lets it guard down and can allow HPV to manifest as an active infection, as is the case with pretty much any type of sickness.
Keep a healthy immune system and you stand a higher chance of not only keeping HPV at bay but also a lot of other nasties.

The use of birth control pills and steroids can also depress the immune system allowing for development of active HPV. Smoking depresses the immune system as well.
