Hello all,
2 years ago I wanted to start BJJ / wrestling ( after watching the UFC / Pride and the Gracies etc ) so I joined a gym where they offer a ground fighting class which is kind of a mixture between wrestling and bjj or catch wrestling if you will.
anyways it all going good for like 9 months, then on my last training day before going on vacation I felt some kind of tingling in my lift ring fnger after training. I thought nothing of it and just went home. after a lil while the finger became real sore. and I cannot even train anymore because of it ( boxing is good just no grappling ).
my finger is not swollen.
not disfigured.
not discoloured.
basicly it just looks like it has always looked and just like the rest of my fingers.
I can do everything with it and no motion makes it hurt or anything so in that sense its all normal.
the problem is. whenever something or someone gives a little tick on the top of my finger (right side only) / or pressed on / against it , it feels like an elephant just stepped on that finger. it hurts so bad sometimes it feels like someone stabbed me in the finger ... it goes down a little downwards in my finger too.
I went to the doctor obviously and he sended me to the hospital who did a check up and came to the conclusion that its nothing big and since my finger looks fine and can do everything normally I should just wait it out it will most likely dissapear on its own.
well we're a year further now and the pain is still there whenever something ticks on that finger or presses on that finger. its really annoying. I can go a long time without noticing anything and then try to get some money out of my jeans and hit my fingr against an button or something and it hurts or press my finger against the car seat handle to put it back and its hurts. and obviously I cant train like that either.
anyone knows if this is a grappling injury ? and if so what can I do against it.
grappling isnt big at all here so I guess if its a grappling in jury my doctor will never find out.
I already made plans to go visit a second doctor now to see if he can find something.
any answers are appreciated
thnx in advance

Hi!
I don't know anything about a grappling injury, but have you asked your doctor about nerve compression causing the pain? It sounds like a nerve problem. The ulnar nerve runs from the elbow down to your pinky and ring finger so maybe that is it?? That's all I can think of. Hope you get it figured out. It's frustrating not to know what is wrong!

yeh it really is. thnx for the help. someone said it might be carpal tunnel syndrome but I read online that pain is not usually a sympthom of carpal, numbness is and I dont have that.
but indeed my doctor said it is most problably a nerve compression but he said he cant do anything about it. he said he'd have to slice open half my hand and then maybe still find nothing. which ofcourse isnt great either who knows the guy might actually damage more nerves instead of healing the messed up one.

while it could very well be something affecting the ulnar(also the c8 nerve in the c spine) it could also possibly be stemming where it actually starts, way up in your c spine area and not actually "in" the finger itself? by the way,the median nerve is what becomes affected with CT syndrome, that would not correlate to the last two fingers. the ulnar does. while you do not actually have a c 8 vertebrae, you DO have that c 8 nerve up there. mine was extensively damaged from spinal cord injury, and i have the very same sensations you are describing right in the very same areas as we speak too.
while this IS the ulnar nerve you are getting this from,it really needs to be tracked from those fingers all the way up to the c spine, just to really 'see' where it is being affected at. considering just what you have been doing lately, you could have suffered some level of injury to your neck area or exascerbated an actual issue up there that was just already there but non symptomatic til 'something' triggered it? just obtaining an MRI on your c spine area would be the really best place to start actually looking for the underlying problem. it would at least rule it in or out, then you can move onto other possible areas of involvement. since that nerve runs from the c spine on down to those last two fingers(it actually innervates the pinkie and only one half of that ring finger), it could be compromised in a few possible areas(the shoulder and the elbow would be the other possible areas,or most likely). but doing that MRI first really may save time. like i mentioned above, this is just a matter of tracking it back to the source.
i would just make another appt with your doc and simply ask him to refer you for that MRI. do not settle for only a CT, it wont show enough detail like an MRI would as far as what you really need to be seen down to the nerve/cord level. i do wish you luck and hope this is not a huge problem. but it does need to be checked to right where it starts. please keep us posted. thnx alot. since it was only my finger hurting I never figured it could potentially be something this big. I made an appointment today with my dotor for tomorrow and he will then send me to the specialist in the hospital where I will definately stand on getting that MRI then. it has been over 9 months now so I want to find the root of the probem. simply taping up the finger aint doing it for me.
also I cant remember any back or neck injury or pain at all ever so I hope it has nothing to do with my spine and or neck but I will get it checked out and keep you up 2 date.
thnx alot for your 2 cents.
hope your own situation is going better.

no problem. just considering how long this has gone on and the fingers not 'normalizing" by now, doing that c spine MRI would at least show whether or not it has spinal connotations or not. considering what you have been doing and i assume will continue to do,it REALLY does need to at least be looked into. some spinal problems just wont always start with neck pain, they can start very simply right where yours are showing, in the fingers. it just needs that looksee and ruled in or out. if there is not actual spinal issues, even something like stenosis or bone spurs in the right spot can cause what you are feeling too, the most likely areas, like i mentioned above, would be the shoulder or the elbow to look next. and yes, DO keep us posted. So I finally had another appointment with the neurology department at the local hospital. they did an "extensive" check up which basicly consisted out of checking my reflexes and the nerve feeling in my body (and ofcourse specificly the hand in question) by poking me with a sharp point and a bold and having my tell them with my eyes closed if it was he sharp or bold side thatwas poking me.
based on that and the fact that my pain does not stray into other parts of my hand/arm and no pain up or downwards my arm towards my shoulder or neck they ruled out any neck or spiral problems.
They basicly told me this is very unique and they have no idea what it is but they dont think it has anything to do with my nerves. I am going back for that MRI but first they are sending me back to the orthopedist to check my bones and tendons again since they believe thats the source of my pain.
However due to the ridiculously long waiting lists this will happen in october, so yeh another few months with pain for no appearant reason whatsoever.
another annoying thing is that latelly the finger has been hurting (though not as bad as normally) well more like feeling weird, tense and cramped up during the night.
Really hope they can find out the problem and solve it.
owh yeh they also ruled out CTS.
well I will give another update in october. also I will be trying accupuncture soon to see if that helps since I've noticed that massaging the hand does help although only for short periods at a time.
and as you've problably noticed english is not my first language so bear with me :)

thanks for the update. i cannot believe they have not just done that MRI on the c spine by now, just to take that deeper look. it could have saved alot of time and hassle for you ya know? another test they can do is called an EMG/NCV? this just checks for only nerve flow impairment or direct nerve compression. i don't know if this would really truely show since this is more of a lt sensory and not a direct numbness were talking here, but it could reveal where this is being impacted at. just doing basic neuro evals to try and rule in or out an actual c spine problem really are not always that reliable in some cases. alot depends upon just what the actual problem really is up there that would dictate symptoms. like i mentioned before, just getting this tracked back to the very base where it starts with the MRI really is the kind of "common sense" thing to do here? its too bad you have to wait such a horribly long time just for an MRI. thats kind of crazy really considering just how long you have been waiting for the real reason for this to be found already.
just make certain to be keeping track of any new symptoms that may pop up before you get that MRI done. you have already had this change from just a small sensory thing to a now painful one. spinal issues are also like this, just rather progressive in nature? so keep track of anything new or any changes that can possibly take place. make certain to note the date of onset. it will help.
well, i guess we will hear again in oct from you? if anything really changes in a more drastic way, let me know,K? good luck, FB

thanks alot fb.
I will make sure to keep you updated and I have also made another appointment with a different hospital with the neuroly department. I will stand on getting an MRI overthere also and hopefully they will give me one or make an appintment for one immidiatly. Only 10 more days till I goto that appointment.
