Do you mean what is commonly referred to as a "dry socket"?

If it is painful (which it can get if the food gets stuck in the hole and irritates the bone), the oral surgeon can put a medicated dressing in it to protect it and dull the pain. But other than that, you will just have to wait until the gum grows over it.
