Hi, I am 20 years old and right now I am on Cipro because of pyelonephritis (kidney infection). This is the 2nd time I get it in 5 months and it seems to be related to having sex. Is that possible? is not that I get a kidney infection each time I have sex but I know it is related because I got UTI twice the day after having sex and always end up with pyelonephritis.

Also, Does having pyelonephritis means that my kidney will be scarred? My doc didn't mentioned that nor she ordered to do any scan or x-ray. She told me to do a urine exam after my course of Cipro (10 days).

She told me that pyelonephritis is not that serious. True??? My abdomen and my back hurts too much and I have fever/chills.

Also, is there any food/drinks that affect UTI and kidney infection? I read on a medical website that citric juice and caffeine are bad, What else should I avoid?

Please, help.

The key to the best kidney function is...you guessed it...severe hydration! Water, water, water. All water, all the time. It'll help with many other minor ailments as well. Cranberry juice also helps support a healthy renal system. Good luck!!!

I am 21 and the same thing happend to me. I have not had a UTI in so long and as soon as I started having sex I started getting them back to back. The last one ended in pyleonephritis and I was admitted to the hospital. This is very serious for me because I had a kidney transplant in 99. It can be a strain on your kidneys and also cause kidney damage. I had x rays that showed I had the infection in 3 different parts of my kidney and I was on Iv antibiotics and cipro for 7 days after discharge from the hospital. My nephrologist told me to make sure I drink lots of water and to also make sure I urinate before and after I have sex. He told me to make sure I wipe from front to back and make sure I stay very clean to avoid UTI's. I heard it is also helpful to drink cranberry juice.
