Anyone ever heard of a child having an "extra" kidney? Went to the ER for stomach pain (severe), had a ct scan doone and the Dr. said it appeared that there was either and extra kidney or an enlarged kidney. Have had ultrasound done, still waiting for results. THis is new to me.... not sure how to proceed or where to look for info.

This can happen, however, it is quite rare. If he already has two kidneys that are functioning perfectly well and this extra kidney is causing him pain, then he can have it surgically removed and the vessels can be tied off. It depends where it is though? Is it in the iliac area around the lower part of his belly? If so, this is where tranplanted kidneys are normally placed, so that all the vessels can be connected in easily to the iliac vessels and this is near to the bladder, so that the ureters can then be connected in.

as it would turn out, after an ultrasound, the diagnosis was mesenteric adenitis (inflammation of the lymph nodes in the stomach) what they initially thought to be an extra kidney was actually a lymph node. This was caused by a viral infection which accounts for the 5 day high fever. We are much relieved that surgery is not needed for the VERY scared 6 year old (not to mention the scared parents!!) Still unsure of the cause of the virus or whether it will reoccur, at least we know what all the tremendous pain was from.

So glad to hear that your little one will not have to have surgery. It is very scarey when you do not know what is wrong w/your child. My 11 yr. old nephew was admitted to the hospital on Monday with a fever of 105.5 and stomach pains. Turns out that after a cat scan of the stomach, his kidney is swollen and they thought it was a bacterial kidney infection, however the Drs. are baffled as to why there is nothing showing in his urine. I truly hope and pray that all turns out good for you and your child.

Thank you Vonfos. My nephew came home from the hospital today. After many tests, none of which were conclusive, all they came up with is that he has scar tissue on his left kidney, and there is no explanation as to why he had such a high fever and the kidney is swollen. He will be getting more tests done in a week. Take care, be safe and God Bless you.
