Hi, I am 45 and have suffered from kidney stones since 1990. In Dec. I had one that was 10mm and I got a new doctor in Dec. I have had a total of 5 stones but the time before this I had three big ones. This one has been keeping an eye on my stone production and did some 24 hr urine tests.
I go back in Sept for a follow up. He has me on
chlorthalidone and potassium. I lose to much calcium out of my kidneys. This has cut it in half so far.
Does anyone else take medicine to regulate calcium lose.
Thanks, Polly

Hope,
Your urologist is incorrect in saying that there are no medications to help prevent stone formation in addition to dietary restrictions. For calcium-oxalate stones you can take potassium citrate(Urocrit-K), which causes oxalates to pass through your bowels and not your kidneys, helping prevention of stone formation. I produce calcium-oxalate stones frequently and my urologist had me try the Urocrit-K, but I had too much stomach upset(loose stool turning into chronic diarrhoea) to stay on the medication. You should give it a try as you might handle it better than I did. Also, current thought is that taking allopurinol (which lowers your uric acid levels) can help prevent both uric acid and calcium-oxalate stones. I hope you can get your doctor to try you on either or both meds and wish you luck in preventing new stones. On the plus side, allopirinol almost never causes problems in those taking it. Take care,
John

Hope. I am curious...how many ounces of water do you drink a day? When you say you keep producing stones, I wonder if we are drinking the same amount. Also, do you drink the same amount pretty much every day?

Have you guys ever considered undergoing lithotripsy treatment?
