Hi , Im 18 , and apprently I've had hydronephrosis on my right kidney since I was born ,I have flank pain constantly , if it's not daily , it's every other day...and also I have experienced alittle bleeding once in a while.. I just wanted to know what is the most common cause of this? Has anyone out there experienced this? Are there any serious consequences to having hydronephrosis???

I apreciate any answers!

I'm 18 also! I don't know if I have hydronephrosis exactly, since I never really heard my urologist diagnosed me with it, but my left kidney is dilated due to obstructions. Flank pain could possibly be a symptom with hydronephrosis, but I'm not sure about the bleeding. You should talk to your urologist about this! And if the pain is bad, tell him/her that too. I think one of the causes of hydronephrosis are urinary tract obstructions. Maybe a consequence of having hydronephrosis is that your kidney could become atrophied (tissue worn down) and possibly lose some function. But all of this is not proven, I'm just predicting from what I've learned. You should ask your doctor the questions you posted or look at many sources online for answers. Good luck!

The most common cause of hydronephrosis is the backing up of urine through the urinary tract due to a blockage. This blockage can be something that you were born with, or it can be due to something like a stone or a tumour. I am not in any way suggesting you hae a tumour--those tumours are very rare and you'd be much sicker--but what I AM suggesting is that you were probably born with some type of anatomical anomaly which has gotten worse over time. Have the doctors mentioned if they are going to do any surgery or investigations to see if they can alleviate the problem?

My son had a kidney stone that formed in one kidney due to the fact that it didn't drain properly. A stone developed and couldn't pass so it grew, we never new he had a stone as it caused him no pain because it couldn't move. The stone caused a blockage, thus he developed hydronephrosis. He occasionally complained of back pain and a school physical revealed he had minute traces of blood in his urine. That's how we found his problem. After removal of his stone. His kidney is no longer dialated.
