has anyone ever been on both meds?? what side effects did you experience? our daughter was on it (sero 600mg and geo 40mg)causing her to wake up with her jaw dislocated on both sides? ER says it is a freaky thing to happen to her. She now needs to see an oral surgeon. Her phy. still wants her to be on both for s short period of time. Need help deciding if she should only take one and not both.

Just curious but how old is your daughter because 600mg is a huge dose for seroquel along with a 40mg dosage of geoden. I'd say lower the dosage because in my opinion what happened was she had a reaction to the meds that caused her muscles in her jaw to stiffen to a point where the jaw could dislocate itself. This happened to me on risperadol where my mouth was stiff and they said it was a side effect of the med. They said that if this happens again they would give me benztropine. This helps to loosen the muscles and relax them. Just a question was she put on 600mg of seroquel right away or did she gradually work her way up to 600 mg of it?

Thanks for your feedback..she is 16yrs old . we took her to the ER because she was having a bad episode (her psychosis are a result of her menstrual cycle) so they gave her geodon (40mg), follwed by seroquel (200mg 3x daily)
this has not helped her only making matters worse and resulting in her jaw being dislocated Since then, I've cut her seroquel (25mg- twice a day) and given geodon (20mg) as needed especially for sleep. WE are still not sure how we can help her but we only know that these meds don't do anything but damage or keep her sedated. WE are looking into finding new doctors who can treat her medical problem and not cover up her symptoms.

I'd reccommend looking for a naturopathic doctor or orthomolecular psychiatrist to find new ways for treatment.

Its hard to find the right one and can be very expensive treatment but it will work.

Personally I would not let a family member take either of these atypical anti-psychotics. If she has acute episodes with her menses I am perplexed that they did not try an older anti-psychotic like Haloperidol with a Benztropine cover (Small maintenance doses increased right before cycle). Geodon and Seroquel are so expensive and literature suggests they are not the best drugs.

Your right about that I hate the fact that these newer antipsychotics cause weight gain. I've already gained almost 50 pounds in just 6 months being on seroquel. Luckily I've stopped it now. It wasn't even working for me anyways and I kept on telling the pdoc my psychosis is not improving can't we try something else. But no it just had to be seroquel. Although I don't think that Geoden causes weight gain though. Hmm I'll have to check on that.

Thanks for your input. She was given meds like Haldo but had strong side effects. We are in week four with seroquel and geodon and boy oh boy! no improvement in sleep and orientation. Her drs don't think of giving her some sleep meds for they think that these meds are the key to her recovering, but I strongly doubt it. I am in the process of seeking help elsewhere.

Good for you. There are typical older anti-psychotics that have wide dosage ranges like Trilifon. Sadly, docs jump to the atypical new ones without trying low dose older ones that have stood the test of time. I am so happy you are seeking other opinions.

If your trying to find something for sleep try using melatonin. Its not something that needs to be prescribed. And its a natural chemical in are bodies anyway. Its very safe to use. You can buy it over the counter at a pharmacy. At least thats where I got mine and it has helped me sleep well so far.
