My 3 year old daughter went for a blood test this morning as part of her check up. When she got the needle in the blood would not flow. I could see it in the tubing but it just wouldn't flow into the collection vial. What could be the reason for this?

Rarely the vacuum seal in the vial can be compromised in some way but it sounds to me like you just had an inexperienced phlebotomist (needle nurse).

Did they try another vial?

Yes she did change the vial. I'm supposed to go back next week when there is another person there but I don't want to go back if it's not being done correctly.

make sure that she drinks alot of water before the next test.
I stupidly thought (a while back) that a fasting blood test meant that I could have NOTHING after midnight so I went into the test, without even a drink of water, and same thing happened. They hit the vein but nothing flowed. I know better now.
Did they use a butterfly? That's a really small needle. They seemed to think using it on my hand worked better.
Good luck
