Hi my name is Linda and i just had bunion surgery last week. I have screws in my toe and its just starting to heal. My question though, since I work on my feet all day how long do you think it will be before I will be able to return to work. I also have a heel spur and am being treated for plantar fascilitis. Will inserts in my shoe really help. I am hoping to go back the April is that a realistic goal. Please tell me what to expect

I'm sure it depends on what your job is and what your Dr.'s orders are. I had dble bunionectomies a year ago Jan. and was able to work (at home in studio) half days sitting at about 2 weeks and by 3 weeks was back at it full time. I was able to walk to the bathroom on day one.
Is yours non weight bearing? What did your Dr. say?

the doctor had me on partial weight baring, I have another question today I finally took a shower since the surgery and I was wondering if there is any kind of cream that I can put on my foot, the skin is very, very dry and flaking.
I have to admit my foot feels very stange, especially my big toe. I am getting very depressed at not being able to do what I did before

Actually, depending on how much swelling you have had, the skin peeling and flaking off likely is normal and not just plain old dry skin. When your foot swelled up after surgery, it stretched out the skin quite a bit. As the swelling goes down, that stretched skin isn't quite elastic enough to shrink back to size, so it will peel off.

And, a nice little perk to all that skin falling off, your feet will be SUPER soft and smooth for a while! All the normal, rough, wear-n-tear hardness on your heels and sides of your feet will be gone, gone, gone! I loved that part!

I know!! My husband keeps joking about my "gangrene" as he jokingly calls it, but I keep reminding him that some people pay a lot of $$$ for their feet to be this soft & smooth!

For the next 10 days of recovery, my husband and I are driving to Florida. is there any precautions I should take if I want to swim in the pool. Do I need some kind of pool shoe. I need a change of scenery and I a hoping this will cheer me up.

I would talk with your doctor since he will know best. I would be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and usee it on your foot if it will be exposed. Personally, I don't think I would want to get in the pool at that point if my incision was still healing since who knows how clean the pool is.

I never put lotion on my foot! Eventually the skin will slough off. Hang in there, I love to get out alot too! Be patient & think of this as a mini-vacation! I am now into my 3rd week & still freak at the though of driving and i have 2 kids!

Thanks guys, it only been 3 weeks since my surgery and it feels like a life time, I am thinking of it as a vacation but it takes all my energy to get dressed and go out. We are going away for a couple of weeks and I am only packing one shoe. Before the surgery I used to walk so quickly and now everything is a effort. Patience is not one of stong points.

I understand exactly what you are saying. I had bunion surgery on 3/18. Everything exhausts me. Just carrying a cup of coffee or climbing stairs has become impossible. Everything that was so easy is exhausting and I have always been a bundle of energy. They gave me a boot right after surgery and said I should be able to walk. I was very excited that I would not be down long. I still can't walk in that boot. I put it on but limp around with crutches because my foot is so very sore. I am wondering if anyone has experience the same thing. Also, the first few days after surgery I really didn't feel much pain. It is now, almost 3 weeks later and my foot has little jolts of pain every evening beginning around 5:00 P.M. It is severe enough to force me to take a pain pill. Is there anyone who is going through this?

My plantar fascitis went away rather quickly by wearing a splint at night for about a month. I got the splint from a podiatrist and it simply keeps your heel very straight at night. That was 2 years ago and I've never had another problem with fascitis.
However..........I have painful bunions bilaterally. There are only a few sandals and one pair of boots that I have left to wear comfortably. After standing or walking through an airport my feet go numb and are very swollen and painful.

I'm looking for reccomendations for an Ortho surgeon in either Massachusetts or southern California where I could recuperate.

Thanks so much
