hello, Does anyone have info on what meds are good for post op pain management for bunion surgery? And did anyone take an anti nausea med to counteract the side effects of the narcotic? Thanks, deedeeartist

I was prescribed the anti-nausea along with my pain meds but personally didn't feel a huge need for it. Also was prescribed percoset but found vicodin more effective. Obviously everyone reacts to medication differently, that was just my experience.

I was prescribed percoset and it worked well, but I was relieved to stop taking it after the first five days. The dosage can vary, so maybe a small dose would work for some. I had no nausea, but felt very antsy/anxious at the end which led me to stop. I think for me, it was great when I had a lot of pain, but I felt the side effects more when the need for pain control decreased.

I had a very radical bunion surgery about 11 years ago and had the WORST nausea, even constant vertigo, because of the pain meds. My very strong recommendations are Percocet for pain, and Promethazine or Zofran for preventing post-op nausea. Do not be a martyr
And try to make it through without any meds. Take care of yourself. You do not have to suffer terribly like I did! What I know now... ;)

Hi there. It's been 3 weeks today since I had my bunion surgery & found immediately I could not tolerate most of the effective pain killers. Nausea & vomiting didn't respond to oral medications; but did with a rectal suppository. I now do best with just Lortab 5 mg , cut in 1/2. I also use a lot of ice on the foot. Good luck!

Hello everyone, Thanks for your comments. I am now 3 days post surgery for the above procedures. I am on oxycodone and reglan for nausea. It took a while to get the pain meds working and I got the help of a good friend who is a doc and not attached to the Kaiser system. I have a very cumbersome boot that goes all the way up to bottom of my knee. My question now is how do I ice anything but the back side of my knee. Have any of you partially removed the boot to ice at the ankle? I was told to not get the dressing wet so I have been at a loss as to how to get to my ankle and make sure the plastic ice pack doesn't sweat and cause some of the dressing to get wet. Any ideas? You have all been so helpful on this site. I have Kaiser in Northen CA and my access is limited to my surgeon just because the system is so instituitionalize. Thanks so much, DeeDeeartist

You can always send and e-mail message to your surgeon through Kaiser's website, it may take them a while to respond, but they are required to do so.
You can leave the boot on and put a bag of frozen peas behind your knee as you elevate your foot. This will cool down the blood on its way to the foot and lessen the swelling. It works, really. There are those of us with casts on that can't ice the foot (although some people have iced the cast) so we put the ice behind the back of the knee. Good luck.

I had the boot, too, but if I was just laying around resting and elevating, I didn't have to wear it. So, when I iced I had the boot off and iced with a bag of peas. I used a bean bag chair to elevate so I'd rest the back of the foot/ankle on the bag of peas which was on top of the bean bag. Sometimes I put the peas on top of my ankle but I always iced at the ankle. If it got too cold or started to get drippy, I'd put 2 or 3 paper towels between the peas and my foot. I've heard of some people using a washcloth or dish towel but, for me, they were too think and I couldn't feel the cold.
