For the past year or so my liver enzymes, both ALT and AST have been somewhat elevated. One about 70, the other 60. Recently they went up a little. Was tested when this first came about for all the likely culprits and nothing evident was found. Doctor said to just periodically check the enzymes. I don't drink at all and never have.

Today out of the blue my back started hurting right below the right ribcage and then moved around to right under the rib cage on the right side abdomen. It is intermittent but very sharp pain. Have no fever.
It is very localized and very painful. What could this be????? I am getting very worried.

Thanks for any input.

Forgot to add... had my gallbladder out six years ago so it can't be that.

I don't know...what other medications/supplements are you taking? Maybe you are overloading your system in some way? See your doctor again ASAP to make sure it is going to be alright though.

I'm just learning about all this myself. My enzyme levels came up high (about like yours) and like you, I don't drink. But I am fighting chronic migraines with lots of other potentially problematic substances: Imitrex, magnesium, B-2, ginger, feverfew, asprin occasioanlly, flonase, clarinex. So I don't know, but will probably have to eliminate some of that until the enzymes go down again - assuming that they do :(

Good luck!

If your alt is high, ask your doctor about nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. If you want to know more, get back to me.

Lisa,
I am having the same exact thing you have described. so far we have not figured out why my liver hurts so much, it seems to go into spasms and the pain is awful. it only started this year. 3 yrs ago they were keeping an eye on my liver enzymes. but nothing more. my gallbladder was removed in 1992.
but I am having the intermittent sharp pains just like you.
I am diabetic, hypothyroid, hypertensive on medications, but been on them for quite a few years with no pains til now.

I was doing web searches for 'pain in liver' when I found this board.
have you found any info for this ?? I will see my DR again mid to late May..to discuss it. but meanwhile I am searching for info.

I saw your reply and thought you might be able to give me some info.
I am new to the board and pretty new to any message board, but had to turn somewhere. I was diagnosed in Sept 04 with Cirrhosis,(Nash) after I had GallBladder Surgery. I finally found a specialist near my area that I like and he is the professor over liver transplantation at that hospital. I have only seen him once in Dec and was told I have Nash, need to loose weight and see you in 6 mos, locally my family doctor never listens to me, and the sad part is I really Love him and he has been my family doc for numerous years. All doc's I've seen say there is no pain with cirrhosis, but I have pain, so much some nights that it wakes me up and keeps me up for several hours. I have a high tolerance for pain and by looking at me you'd never know I'm sick. I go to work everyday even though most of the time I don't feel like even functioning but force myself to go on. If anyone has NASH with Cirrhosis will you please let me know if you are experiencing anything. I went back and got some old records from the only time I was ever hospitalized (12) years ago, with a viral infection in the liver, thought I had meningitis, but luckily didn't, in those records the pathologists and doctor noted cirrhosis, but yet never told me one word about it, in fact never gave me a diagnosis other than the viral infection. I can't believe that there's nothing I can do but sit by and wait. No medication, nothing. Even though I like the specialist it seems like I've just been cast aside until I progress further. Any information that anyone could give would be greatly appreciated. I am insulin resistant, high blood pressure and have thyroid disease (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis) for many years. My theory is the insulin resistance along with the Thyroid is one of the culprits but getting any doctor to listen to me is another story. Please contact me with any opinion or advice..
