View Full Version : Aching/tired feeling in feet when walking

Hey Folks:

I walk (not jog or fast walking) with my chihuahua every morning and by the time I get half way my feet are acheing and feeling tired. I walk almost a mile maybe not even that. I am 54 yrs old and over-weight about 20 pounds.
I wear good walking shoes too. Do you all think its because of my weight that my feet hurt? :D . I also have osteoarthritis but I do not think its that. It does not hurt like arthritis on my hands.

I suppose the extra weight can hurt your feet, but I suspect you also have the wrong shoes. Try to go to a place where they can check your feet and tell you what type of shoe you need, like Roadrunner Sports. I thought I always had the right shoes until I developed a neuroma and the podiatrist told me they were too small, even though to me they did not feel too small, so I went to Roadrunner and yep, I needed a bigger and wider shoe. But seriously Mary, you need to get some weight off, so keep walking, try to walk longer each day, even if it is only a 1/4 of a mile, take care...

Thanks Sunny...I dont think its the shoes, I have the right size and all.
I guess it could be the extra weight but then again there are plenty of people that are over weight and they dont have this problem. Its more than 1/4 of a mile , close to a mile but I cannot walk more than that. My hip joints hurt too.
Guess I need to get an MRI to see what is going on.

Even if the shoes are the right size, they might not be be a good shape for your foot. I only recently realized that my sneakers didn't have enough arch support for me. Go to a specialized sneaker store, talk to some of those guys who really know their stuff.

Look at it this way, a new pair of sneakers is $60 and you can buy them tomorrow. An MRI is $1000 and you have to make an appointment and wait and all kinds of hassle.

Of course, if new shoes don't relieve your pain, talk to a doctor. He might be able to identify the problem just from a short exam.

I would definately get the MRI to see what is going on. I have arthritis in my feet and also have a lot of pain after walking about 1/2 mile. The MRI can show degerative changes in the foot...and there lot's of conservative treatments that may help you walk more comfortably.

In terms of shoes, my podiatrist recommended a very good running shoe as these are designed to ease the shock of walking/running.

I recently bought new shoes and went to a place that specializes in running, called Fleet Feet here. I don't think you would need this since you aren't running, but I do agree that footwear is so important. I was told that I should get a FULL SIZE larger than my actual size for my athletic shoes. I had no idea! I always thought maybe half a size bigger. I measure at an 8 1/2 and always wear this size in my dress shoes but the lady insisted I get a 9 1/2 for my running shoes. They felt very big, but so far so good! Athletic shoes should be replaced about every 6 months as well. Some say this is even more important than the kind of shoe itself. You may already do all of this though.

You mentioned your weight... it COULD be that you need more arch support. Extra weight can cause pain in the arches and this even happens to anyone at a healthy weight as well; it just depends on how you walk. I bought some $12 Dr. Scholl's arch support gel inserts for my shoes and they are great! They only are the half-shoe kind, not the whole length. I just bought some more by Life Fitness but haven't tried them out yet. If you do suspect any other problems, it is a good idea to look into custom inserts/orthotics for special needs.
