I am a 24 year old male. I am a non-smoker, and do not drink. I am overweight however. I have always been a night person, even when I was a kid, I would stay up all night and sleep most of the day.

In the past 5 years or so, I've been able to have a "normal" sleep cycle. Going to bed between midnight - 4 AM and waking between 8 AM- 12 PM. This schedule has always worked pretty decent for me and has never had any problems.

However, in recent months, I have been unable to sleep. I've been trying to sleep at night because I work during the day now. I don't need to get up until almost noon so I have been trying to go to bed anywhere between 10 PM to 4 AM. However, no matter what time I try to sleep, or how long I've been trying that same schedule... the same issue still happens.

Lets say that I go to bed at 10 or 11 at night. I will almost ALWAYS wake up at exactly 1:30 or 2:00 AM and I will be wide awake and can't go back to bed until 9 AM or so. If I go to bed at 2 AM or so, I will wake up at 6 AM or so and again, be wide awake. It seems like I am always waking up around 3-4 hours after I go to bed. During that 3-4 hours of sleep, I sometimes wake up with my heart racing like crazy and not sure why. If for some reason I am finally able to sleep more than 6 hours, I sometimes wake up with a very bad headache.

This is really starting to become a problem in my life and seeing that I don't have any health insurance either... this puts me in a bad spot.

Any idea what could be going on?

Since you don't have health insurance, try taking excedrin PM. Also losing weight and exercising will do wonders for sleep problems.

Maybe you have sleep apnea? If you're waking up with rapid heart beat and headaches, maybe it's your body re-adjusting to getting back to normal after not breathing for a short period.

Even if you don't have insurance, you can pay out of pocket and most offices will bill you and let you pay over time. It might be worth the office visit fee to get a Dr. oppinion.

Please keep in mind, not everyone viewing your post will have an opinion.... or whatever it's called.... if you don't have insurance... this may become an issue, because honestly, you can go to a regular MD but they'll want you to go to a sleep specialist... and then that sleep specialist cant do much for you until you get a sleep study run.... those cost.... oh about 4 grand.... and then they can diagnose you and if it's apnea then you'll have to a get a CPAP or other durable medical equipment, and those are expensive.... Depending on the severity of your weight problem.... this may cure all your sleep issues... apnea is linked directly with increase of weight... since the extra skin relaxes right into your windpipe(trachea) causing the delay in O2 intake...
You may also try to invest in special pillows that will prop you in different positions and see if this helps relieve some of your awakenings... then again it could be something not a sleep disorder.... Hope that helps....
You could look into getting some assistance from the gov't if you can't afford or if your place of employment doesn't have insurance....
