My four month old son suffers from bouts of severely painful lower intestinal gas. We have tried several formulas, we are now back on soy formula and that seems to help alleviate most of his distress. However, he still gets nasty gas pockets that make him cry so hard he is red and gasping. We try rocking, bouncing, bending/extending his legs, rolling him on the bed, a warm water bottle on his tummy etc, chamomile tea; all to help move the gas. I don't give him any fluids except formula. Would giving him some plain water help? Or I was thinking of adding some water to his formula; 5 ounces formula and 1 ounce water, just once or twice a day to help things from getting stopped up. It seems like he poops once every other day and his poops are getting firmer. Is it ok to give prune juice everyday? maybe a half an ounce in the morning bottle and one in a later bottle? I don't want to overwork his little bowels either. I just want him comfortable. I feel like we are almost there but not quite.

It's so pitiful when infants have painful gas. My daughter had it so bad, and I felt helpless, I sometimes cried with her because I felt so bad for her. My son? Same problem, and we had to put him on Soy formula.

These are the things I did to help them both-
1.) 1 tsp. of dark Karo syrup in two bottles a day. This softens their stools
2.) 2 oz. of warm sugar water 1 time a day between feedings (just enough sugar to give it a sweet taste, it doesn't take much at all)

**Both of these are home remedies that have been handed down in my family, some other people may know about them too, not sure, but my pediatritian approved it.**

3.) Symethicone drops you can purchase over the counter. Directions are on the bottle- they really help with the gas
4.) If they are constipated, you can use the tiny little infant glycerine suppositories. I didn't like having to do it, but had to on occassion
5.) You can add apple juice once or twice a day between feedings too. Apple juice sometimes works as a laxative for infants. You would want to ask your ped. doctor how much is ok. I remember giving just a couple onces watered down even before they were 4 months old.

I hope you can get your little fella comfortable!!

ozzybug has some good advice
I used the Symethicone drops (brand name Ovol I think?) apparently they are synthetic so just go straight thru the baby and do not leave residue in their system..it is formulated for infants and works great...
