My child has been sick soooooo many times this fall and winter. She is one year old now and we just got over another high fever and no other symptoms (doctor always says it's a virus). She had vomiting and diarrhea at 7 months and 11 months. Plus she's had numerous ear infections. I am starting to think it has to do with the daycare she is in and not necessarily her immune system. I'm running short on time off from work and it's only March. Not to mention it seems either my DH or I catch whatever she has. Depending on what I hear back from you guys, will help me decide if I should start looking for other daycare arrangements. Thanks in advance, Ally.

I would guess it is the daycare. My nephew goes to one (he's 20mo), and his doctor said that kids who go to daycare have colds on average 3 out of 4 weeks! That's a lot of colds. I don't know how accurate that information is, but anyway if there's anything that kids know how to share, it's their germs. My ds (22mo) has only been sick once this year, he had the flu back in October, but he stays home and only goes to a playgroup once a week.
Hope this helps a bit!

my LO is 13 months and now that I am back at work, she is going to a lady who cares for her at her home, she only watches my kid and hers who are now 9 and 16!!
She has had a few sniffles over the winter season but nothing much really. My eldest is in a preschool (which is nuts over hygene (Sp?) ) so she hasn't really had anything either...
my guess is the daycare..lots of little kids = lots of germs BUT it will mean that your LO will be immune to many cold bugs as s/he gets older probably..
I also try and get them outside for a time during the day to get fresh air...
and make sure that you are getting enough rest and vitamins!!

Did you mean vitamins for me or my DD? My DH and I take vitamins, but I would love to also be able to give her vitamins. Are there any for a one year old?
We are interviewing daycares now and hopefully move her to a more hygienic atmoshere soon. Now I dread telling my current daycare provider that we are leaving. Thanks for the help.

Hi
I meant are you (mom) taking vitamins...i don't think they are recommended for small children or babies.
With regards to hygiene at daycares I would look for one that proves it does the things they may say. But have you thought of a home daycare setting that may not have soo many people in and out I think thats why my LO is in pretty good shape once they get to around 2 yrs their immune system is stronger and more able to repel viruses..so my LO will go to a large daycare at around 2 yrs.
If you are going with a daycare I would try a small one if possible and see how long staff have been there etc check it out before giving up your current carers, does your LO like it there? is she comfortable? is a move going to upset her?

Hi there,
I just wanted to let you know that my ds's doctor recommended us giving him a "poly vitamin" when he was a baby (I think it was his 12 mo checkup, but it might've been before that) because I was a bit concerned that he wasn't getting enough vitamins from his diet, and I wanted to avoid him becoming sick. He said this was fine. They're in liquid form, so it's fine for babies. One ds turns 2 (in May), we'll give him the chewable kind of multivitamin.
Just wanted to let you know about this! You also might look into giving echinacea for kids every once in awhile, you can just give a couple drops a day in food or juice (I'm not sure what the taste is like straight from the bottle--although the kind we have says it's tangerine flavored, so it might be ok), and this should help boost baby's immune system. Your doctor might be able to give you more information on this.

Thanks for the replies.
I will ask my ped. about the vitamins you have mentioned. DD is also refusing cow's milk, and I'm soooo tired of paying out the *** for formula. But she won't even drink formula with cow's milk mixed in it. So I'm wondering if I should take her off formula completely or what exactly I'm supposed to do. But I'm getting off topic.
The daycare I use is an in-home setting. I really like the lady and so does my DD. There are 7 children total and my DD has been the only one under 2 until last week. Another child her age started. In-home daycares in my state are allowed to have 8 children with no more than 2 under the age of 2. But her home is small and I'm hoping spring comes quickly so the house can be aired out and the children can get outside a bit. I have called around and visited a few other providers. I'm starting to hear the same thing over & over. "It's been a bad winter, my kids have been constantly sick. I (Provider) never get sick, but I have this year. It's just been terrible." So I'm starting to wonder if I should take DD out of her familiar surroundings and away from her "friends".
Thanks for all input!

its been a bad winter too where I live in Canada, seem like everyone has been sick...I would do more research before moving your LO at this point. Spring HAS to be around the corner!!!

I stay with my baby at home, now a year old.
Cross my fingers, he has only been "sick" twice, period. Last time was in September when he was 6mo. Those times were basically colds and ear infections, the last including fever and very sickly behavior for a short time.
He had a solid fever a month ago, but he wasn't acting sick, and the doctor said it was nothing to worry about if he wasn't having problems. I don't count that (or other times of minor fever, or rashes, etc).
