Hello, I am interested in the fatty liver reversal diet? I read the links that were posted on the previous fatty liver board and they were good. The links mentioned that fatty liver can be reversed by eating a balanced diet and avoiding alcohol. I was wondering if anyone has more details about what the diet consists of or post and example menu? Thank you.

My doctor just told me to lose weigth SLOWLY, like 1-2 lbs a week. He said if it's any faster, more damage can be done to the liver. I worked with a nutritionist at the hospital, and told me to aim for 45 grams of fat a day (typical person about 60 grams a day). I personally am doing weight watchers, and am being sure to make sure I get adequate protein (I'm a vegetarian so I do that through dairy and fake meat products). My personal trainer told me it's important to make sure you're getting enough protein to help with weight loss. I eat lots of fruit and veggies. The nutritionist said to eat several small meals a day, instead of 2-3 big ones. She said this is easier on the digestive system including the liver and pancreas. It's important not to starve yourself, to make sure you get enough calories. You may want to consider seeing a nutritionist like once just to make sure you're getting enough calories and to help guide you in what you're supposed to eat. I know to join weight watchers online, it's only about 15 bucks a month, I don't think that's so bad if I know it's helping my health. In a nutshell, my doc said lowfat diet, NO crash diets.

Also stay away from packaged foods. They are not only bad for your liver they also have hidden salts and preservatives that we do not need. I stay totally natural and have for years. My only downfall is I like to hang out and drink on weekends. I cannot drink more than 2 to 3. I know I would like to see this reversal diet too...Lisa

Hello, Thanks. This was accually for my sister. She's an abstainer. I'm the one who has the one glass of wine on Sundays, and she's the one that got the fatty liver. I guess she was just enough overweight to get it, plus she used to go on all sorts of "crazy" diets. She also has to be on a low-protein diet due to her health. So I guess she should really watch her fat and salt/sodium intake.

How many calories go along with that fat gram count?
Did they suggest that? Thanks
I think the Atkins diet has ruined my counts forever!

Hello, My sister and I both have cholesterol problems as well, so our doctors have us on a 30% fat diet. We both stay in the range of 10-25% fat. It's just so hard for me to eat all that food. Since we are both almost the same height and small boned, (I'm a littler shorter.)we're allowed 1400 cal. and 16-39 grams of fat. (We're 5'3.") We used a chart we found in a cookbook by Lynn Fischer called "Fat Free Fabulous Cooking." Amazon still sells the book. Plus we have to exercise at least 60 min. per day. (1/2 morning walk and 30-60 min. of biking or exercise video.)I know 1400 cal. doesn't sound like much food, but it really is when everything is low fat. (Fruits and vegies are very low in fat and don't really have many cal.)It's really not that hard. As far as flavor...just get into spices like garlic powder, black pepper, hot pepper, tumeric, curry, etc.

If you want to figure out your own. 1 gram fat = 9 cal. So you'll have to ask your doctor how many cal. you need, since everyone is different in reguards to height, build, activity, and male/female. Hope this helps.
