i just got a call from doctor saying that there was an abnormality in my liver test. he said that a normal range is 40 and mine is at 81. i will be going back in to do more tests next week but wanted to get some info on what that means. should i be really worried. i'm 32, non-smoker and social drinker, have been on antibiotics off and on for about 10 years for acne and have done the atkins diet off and on. any info would be appreciated.

I was on the Atkins diet and the same thing happened to me. My alt count was 72. I go back in two weeks for more test and have stayed off the Atkins for the last two weeks. Good luck to you. Let us know how the tests go.

Try the South Beach Diet it is healthier than the atkins..the atkins diet has too many bad fats that our liver does not need. As for the carbs they are also bad for your liver. I know when I eat carbs my stomach blows up and my side hurts and when i don't eat bad carbs i don't have discomfort on my right side..Lisa

I have had elevated liver enzymes (on and off) for over 10 years and I am still here. If you drink, stop. You might want to get the book called liver cleansing diet by Dr. Cabot. It gives you all kinds of info on the liver and healthy diet that can cleanse the liver and many people after following this don't have any further problems. My liver enzymes are very slightly elevated now and sometimes they are fine. Sometimes it's caused by drinking, hepatitis, mono, meds, celiacs disease (which I have), exposure to toxins. But the good news is that alot of times the liver can repair itself...but you must take care of it/you.
