I am 46 years of age, overweight and i have a cholesterol monitor for home use. My last recent reading was 7.04 although i did manage to get it down to 6.27 a few months ago. It also read high when i had it tested at my GP. I am desperately trying to get it down without having to resort to statins but my question is, when am i supposed to go onto statins? i told my GP that i wanted to do this myself first and although i am trying to lose weight (not easy) and i take lowering cholesterol drinks etc it just seems such hard work to get the number down - any ideas what i should do?

Do you know what your HDL, LDL, and VLDL subcomponents are? Generally, high HDL with low LDL and VLDL is desirable, while the opposite is undesirable.
The usual non-drug ways to help things here:
Lowering LDL:
Avoid trans-fats from hydrogenated oils.
Avoid saturated fats from red meat fat, dairy fat, and coconut and palm oil.
Replace with unsaturated fats from vegetable sources other than coconut, palm, or hydrogenated oils.
Lose excess body fat.
Raise HDL:
Increase exercise.
Avoid trans-fats from hydrogenated oils.
Lower VLDL:
Avoid sugars.
Avoid alcohol.
Lose excess body fat.
