Yes, you can get cancer in the throat. Esophageal cancer is a throat cancer, and there may be one or two other types of throat cancer.

You can die from any type of cancer. For most cancers, the trick is to discover them early, when treatment may be able to cure them.
If you smoke, you're more susceptible to esophageal cancer as well as cancer of the voice box. If you have gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), you're more susceptible to esophageal cancer. In those cases, your doctors need to watch you more closely. They can look at your esophagus through an endoscope to see if there's any damage. In fact, with GERD, people frequently develop a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's esophagus. Once you have that, endoscopes are usually done yearly and if the condition worsens, there are some treatments that can be done before it actually turns into cancer.
May I ask why you're asking about throat cancer?
