View Full Version : Bronchitis for over a month?

I used to smoke about 3 packs a week....about a month ago I smoked heavily one night and had a sore throat the next morning and it lead to what I think is bronchitis....I went to the doctor and she prescribed some antibiotics....it seemed to be working because I was coughing a lot less....after the 10 days of antibiotics I got cold symptoms in addition to coughing up a lot of nasty flem......I went on another antibiotic for 10 days and i've been off of it for over a week and I still cough up a lot of flem.........I don't have a shortness of breath or feel bad, but when I deeply inhale or exhale I feel a realllly deep tickle and it makes me cough really hard. This is my first time with what I think is bronchitis.....can bronchitis last over a month? Sometimes I don't cough for a few hours but when I do it's vicious....In the morning the nasty stuff that I cough up is green and then throughout the day it's clear and kind of thin....(yuck)......I know I have to go back to the doctor's but I just wanted to find out if this has ever happened to anyone......I'm going to go back to the doctor's but I'm scared it's something serious...I just want someone to tell me that this can happen with bronchitis so I'm completely nervous getting tested.....I have no shortness of breath and feel pretty fine otherwise...

Some pretty nasty things can happen with bronchitis. Because it's green it tells me the infection you were on isn't completely gone -- I think they'll be afraid you'll have pneumonia if they keep this up, and they might want to do a sputum culture test to see what kind of bug you're growing and how long they should medicate you for, after this.

Because two courses of antibiotics not clearing it up is pretty ridiculous.

I've heard of symptoms lasting a month or so, but mild symptoms, beyond the acute green-phlegm stage.

Thanks...hopefully it will be nothing major...I'm a paranoid person......It looks green and nasty just right when I wake up and then throughout the day it's just clear/white.....and sometimes I don't cough for a couple of hours....but that damn deep tickler when I inhale or exhale makes me cough up stuff like crazy......BLAH......Does this sound familiar to anyone else?? Just tell me something positive before I go to the doctors so I'm not a scared little baby.

I will say that if you can still comfortably climb a flight of stairs at this point, it is probably nothing major (like pneumonia) and will clear itself up.

Good luck with that...I hope it works out....

It's almost 2 weeks later and my symptoms are a little better, now I don't cough as much during the day, but when I laugh I cough REALLY hard and I still have stuff in my chest because when I make myself exchale I can hear weasing sounds....I hope it clears up soon, it seems like it's never going to go away...I'm on about a month and a half.....GET OUT OF MY LUNGS......I have no problem breathing and I don't have many coughing fits during the day...but I don't know why that stuff won't clear out of my lungs.......does this take time sometimes?
