Any have any information about BOOP? My mother-in-law is on a ventilator and has been diagnosed just today with this. Been on websites and most seem to be "textbookish" and over my head. Websites, books, etc. would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!

Boop, as you've probably figured out from the internet, stands for bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia.
I don't know very much about it, aside from what can be found in the Merck manual.
http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual/section6/chapter78/78f.htm Is the entry in the Merck manual that I found. Yes, it's textbooky. To translate, symptoms typically last greater than 2 months, few have symptoms for more than six months before diagnosis.
Lab tests can't definitively test for BOOP. They're usually low on oxygen, have a high white blood cell count, an abnormal lung function test, and an abnormal x-ray.
From what I understand, granulation or a type of scarring forms within the smallest airways, and the alveoli surrounding these become inflamed. Pneumonia then, is a reaction to the lung injury, and this particular style of pneumonia is not specific to BOOP but can be found in the other conditions listed afterwards.
It's treated with corticosteroids (like prednisone) that are basically heavy-duty anti-inflammatories. This results in a recovery for 2/3rds of patients, by their numbers.
Another good site is the booptown what is boop site -- http://www.epler.com/BoopWhat'sBoopDiseaseInformation.htm. This explanation is a little easier to understand and needs less translation.

Hi! I was diagnosed with BOOP in October - it is exactly as "wrin" described it - I had abnormal chest x rays and mri scans - my lungs looked like broken glass, was hypoxic, and had trouble breathing. I was on prednisone for 4 months - I did have some slight scarring in the right lung. As a result of this, I also had nerve damage to the nerves that control the diaphragm and vocal cords - I still have trouble breathing when I start moving around, and am in speech therapy to retrain my vocal cords to move correctly. I was never bad enough to be on a ventilator - good luck to your mother in law!

Hi again! I just wanted to thank you for recommending the epler web site on BOOP - I just went to it and couldn't belive it - everything I read was just as I experienced it - I can't tell you what a relief it was to actually learn more about what happened (and is continuing to happen) to me. Thank you SO much!
