So I was in a car accident and had stitches on my chin. I have a cleft chin, and the cut is about 2 inches long going from side to side. it's U shaped (like a little smile).
I got 6 stitches in the muscle, and 15-20 stitches on the cut. I've been using bacitracin to keep it moist and clean. I haven't been able to shave obviously. Stitches are coming out tomorrow after 6 days. Cut seems to be healing well.
Questions:
1. How long should I wait to shave?
2. What creams should I use on my skin to reduce scarring potential?
3. Any special soap I should use that could help as well?
4. Will I have hair growth there anymore, or is that gone?
thanks!

I was in a car accident a few years back where the airbag went off on the first impact, but then my face hit the steering wheel on the second impact. I had burns across the bottom half of my face from the airbag, and couple cuts on my chin, and then a bigger cut on the top of my lip about 2 inches long. The doctor came in and said I didn't need stitches, but would likely have some scarring. The lip cut didnt scar, but the smaller cuts actually did (about the size of a nail). I met with a plastic surgeon who said he could remove the scar, but I would end up with a new scar about half the size, so it wasnt worth it to me.
The doctor told me to keep the area really moist to help prevent scarring. There's the creams out there like mederma, and I have also heard of breaking vitamin e capsules and using that oil on the scar. Whether or not hair will grow back will just take time to tell. I would wait till the area is completely healed before shaving. Try and shave around it till then. You might also want to consider seeing a platic surgeon or a dermatologist. They may be able to prescribe topical ointments to help healing.

thanks. i am going with the goatee look for now. i do have mederma. it says on the instructions from the hospital to wait 3 weeks from the date of injury to start using creams, so i am still using the bacetracin for now. i am going to try to meet with a plastic surgeon or dermatologist as soon as possible.
