I have horrible ear aches, pressure, noises from a recently diagnosed TMJ disorder. Anybody have experience with this or have any suggestions, this has been really scarey for me, and I hope there's something I can do to make this better b/c docs say there's not much except heat, asprin(which I'm allergic too), and a mouth guard (that I just got). Any suggestions or experiences are appreciated!!

I have this. I have had TMJ problems for over 20 years. Just recently has my jaw gotten so deranged that my ear on my left side is having major problems in hearing. I have been told that I need surgery to repair the joint. As with all surgeries they are a small fortune. What you will find is that our disorder is a SPECIFIC exclusion of health insurance coverage. I am still awaiting my surgery. I am PRAYING that the Obama administration will help those of us suffering. You have been told mostly correctly in that unless you are super rich and can pay your way, you probably will suffer. A surgeon who deals with the jaw joints is who you should see next as dentists do not do that.
In my opinion, TMJ for most people is a medical issue and not a dental one. I have tried every possible dental answer and none worked as this is not a dental problem--it is a joint issue which needs a dr. who specializes in that joint.

I wish you luck and health,
(Another Italian Lady)

First of all mouth guards just make it worse, they affect occlusion or 'bite'. The best (slow!) solution is a series of jaw exercises, of which there are plenty of examples on line, and relaxation. Also several good books on TMJ.
Try various and see which work for you, but give them time; a couple of weeks each. Avoid pills like the plague.
