Hi,

Hi Everyone,

I have two questions that may help me decide which direction to take next.

First one..........Has anyone been really overweight with FM and then lost weight and noticed a huge difference in your pain levels? Due to not being able to do much exercise, I've gained about 40 lbs since I was diagnosed. I'm thinking about having the Lap Band procedure.

Second......anyone try accupuncture? Massages hurt me too much.

Thanks a bunch!

Hi, I gained a bit of weight when I was on Lyrica. I also tried acupuncture four times and will not go back. I felt a bit of relief for a couple of hours then I was in very bad pain for days after. It's not for me but maybe others had relief. I like the massage therapy, but they were taking it easy on me because I had other issues than Fibro.

:) First let me say, I have had FM since I was in my early 20's and I just turned 50. I just, over the last 3 months, changed my diet ALOT and lost 22 lbs. and I have not felt this good in many many years.

I have TONS more energy and my pain level is way down. If I knew doing this would have helped this much, I would have done it years ago.

I eat 6 small meals a day - I have cut out most sugar - not all because I feel if you deprive yourself 100% of something you'll never stick to a change of eating. I do not use anymore butter - just small amounts of olive oil. Not much bread, but I do have it on occasion. Lots of fresh fruit and vege's - sweet potato's, brown rices - chicken, fish, not much red meat....lots of water, green tea, seltzer and cranberry juice without added sugar. I will not touch artificial sweeteners either. Its really easy to do and although I craved sugar BAD the first few weeks, it has gotten much easier.

I now feel so much better that I am walking 2-3 times per week for about 1/2 hour. I sometimes don't feel well after walking, but if I rest a bit, I feel better in about an hour or two. I know exercise tolerance comes slowly to FMers.

I have tried acupuncture and it helped me tremendously. I just could not continue to go because of cost. I do go for massage twice a month which helps me very much. I found a wonderful therapist who is well-versed with FM and I think thats very important. Plus you need to tell your therapist what feels good and what doesn't or you'll suffer afterwards.

I only take a low dose antidepressant at bedtime which helps me sleep and helps my pain. I take no other meds - they really don't help much...Motrin on occasion when I am very achy. I do take some vitamins - the basics and acedolpholis too.

Seriously, I think what you put into your body, especially people with FM, affects you greatly. I can say that for sure now because I feel SO MUCH BETTER. I still have bad painful days now and then, but I would say I am about 60-65% better and after suffering with this for 25 plus years, I am very happy.

Additionally, dougrobin01 ... I really did not answer your question entirely!!!

I am not very overweight - about 30 lbs. But, my weight came off just by changing my diet - not exercising. The exercise can come after the weight loss when you have more energy.

Have you tried any kind of weight loss program ??? I would look into it or do it yourself before considering surgery. Remember, surgery of any kind can and many times does worsen FM.

Hi, Yous speak of the surgery worsening FM. Ever since I had shoulder surgery I have gone down hill every quickly. It is like you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. My ortho wants to do my other shoulder and I am to scared to do it after the last results.

Yes Jacqueline, I know that surgery or trauma of any kind - mental or physical can worsen FM. I mean, its not definite, but if your suffering already, why make things worse if you can help it.

In your case, if you have an actual injury, you may HAVE TO have it done. How did your FM get worse? More pain at the site of the surgery or just in general?

I had to have my entire thyroid removed 4 years ago and I was so worried about my FM. It did worsen it for awhile - I did gain alot of weight and thought for sure I would never get rid of it, but I did!!! And, the "old-fashioned way" !! Eating sensible and cutting out crap!!!! ;) My FM did settle down after the surgery and now its much better and I pray it stays that way. I am not expecting miracles; I know better after having this so long; but any improvement I will take!!!

When I had my shoulder surgery it was terrible. I have never had a so painful surgery as that one. I have not been the same since. My shoulders are still sore, but my whole body aches. I have very little strength and I tire very easily. I have many more symptoms, to many to mention. I now have a hard time emptying my bladder, I saw another ortho today and he does not think my back problems are related. I really need a doctor to answer my problem with this, but so far no help. Thanks for the reply , and take care.
