I will be lying down and suddenly I get this gasp like air is being sucked into my lungs, completely out of sync with my normal breathing pattern. It only lasts a second or two, but I'm worried because I smoke. Any ideas if this is serious or not?

Hi there. I don't know if this is serious or not; but the best thing you can do for yourself is to stop smoking. That's the best advice I can give you. Good luck! Deb
Getting it checked out by a doctor, if it keeps up, would be a good idea too.

I have the same thing you are describing except I do not smoke. I have this forced deep breath whenever I inhale. You mentioned when lying down, I do this around the clock every few minutes. And before I am finished inhaling, there is a jerk to my breathing. Did you ever find out what is causing your problem?
