I've heard that organic coconut oil is good for low thyroid and just about everything else. It's supposed to be a super health food. Has anyone else heard this?

I have heard about that before, but I haven't looked into it and the reason it would be beneficial. It is important to me to understand WHY things could work......with that said, I recently found out I have thyroid problems which came to me somewhat as a shock because it literally started overnight and I ignored symptoms for a week until I found a large lump on my throat which lead me to the doctor. The lump turned out to be a cyst, but I indeed have nodules on my thyroid and it caused my flurry of symptoms.
I am currently hyperthyroid and I can waiting for my in depth test to come back within a few days so I know if I have Hasimotos or Graves disease. I intend to treat this naturally with herbs, Chinese medicine, etc..... most people think I am nuts and I have met others with thyroid problems that tell me it is as simple as "taking a pill." Whatever, they can take them chemical pills and stick it.....I refuse to accept that. I want to know what the underlying CAUSES are the the autoimmune disorder and treat the root of the problem, not just the symptoms.
I do happen to use coconut oil nearly everyday. I use it to shave my legs and also as a body moisturizer in the shower/bath. It is wonderful for the skin and leaves you moisturized without being oily.

If you have elevated TSI and TPO antibodies at the same time , you have rare co-existing Grave's and Hashi's. xLarge cyst if symptomatic, can be treated with PEI; but in many cases the Hashi + Grave's is treated with RAI.

I know a number of people who use coconut oil regularly and I have also, but since I no longer have a gallbladder I find it a bit hard to digest taking it by the spoonful. Many people like it because it also helps with weight loss, if that is something desired. Like a previous poster, I also use it as a moisturizer.
Regarding the thyroid, I am also Hypo and have Hashi as well. I take Armour instead of the synthetic products, which my body does not tolerate well. I'm an alternative girl at heart but I would exercise caution with your thyroid. In the beginning I tried other things but invariably became extremely fatigued. You need to have regular thyroid panels done, whatever you take, to make sure that you are in the right zone for your body and adjust whatever you are taking accordingly.

Check out the book, "Stop the Thyroid Madness."
To the person who mentioned that Graves/Hashi's is treated with RAI, no thanks. I will search for any alternative, [I]radioavtive radiation[I] is not an option here for obvious reasons, plus I have a baby that I stay home with and I cannot go into isolation and stay away from her for a least a week.
Coconut oil is beneficial, so regardless, I would take it and continue to use it. ;)

I have low thyroid and did not find the virgin coconut oil helpful in my case. But it certainly can't hurt to give it a try. What works for some doesn't always work for everyone. Another interesting thing to explore is your iodine levels. Some studies have shown that too much or too little iodine can slow down thyroid function. I'm still looking into it more.
A word of caution about the coconut oil: start slow (maybe one teaspoon/day, and then work your way up over time). If you take too much right away it can give you diarrhea.

It's interesting you mention it. I read something on a natural cures site that coconut oil can be used to help back pain! I just ordered some and used it on my back for two days. I'm still hurting, but my skin is very soft!
As far as eating it for weight loss, I definitely need to lose weight, so I might try this after checking with my doctor. I have a problem with my cholesterol, so I need to make sure it's ok to eat.
