Three weeks ago I had a quintuple bypass. Just want to speak with someone who has also had this procedure.

My surgery was an emergency directly following heart cath. I cannot come to grips with the fact that my chest was cut open, my heart was stopped and that surgery was done on my heart. I'm finding it difficult to get back to a "normal" routine, and wonder if there is even a "normal" after heart surgery.......tell me if this happened to you, and if so, how did you handle this.

Hi,
It's just a matter of time before you adjust.
time heals everything.

It will take about 8-9 weeks for your chest to get back to normal. You will feel much better as time passes. My doctor told me to walk, walk, and walk some more. Now i feel great riding my bike, treamill daily and weight lifting.I have lost 20 pounds and my cholestrol is 125.Hang in there you will feel better soon.Sure, early on i felt just like you do now.

Marjorieelaine:
I had six bypasses in 1981. A recent angiogram shows the bypasses are still in operation, and a lot of corollary circulation has developed in the 28 years since surgery.
The feeling you seem to express happened to me after my 1974 massive MI. As a result, I had severe angina and life was miserable. Then in '81, my cardiologist advised me that my choices were basically surgery or almost certain further heart attacks, I was glad to undergo the bypasses.
After a few weeks recovery, I started walking 3 to 5 miles per day at a rapid pace. It was delightful to realize that the bypasses had eliminated the angina.
So here it is 28 years later. I lead a normal life, take the medicines my cardiologist prescribes (I know what each medicine is intended to accomplish), and am eternally grateful that the surgery developed around 1969 was there to let me live a normal life.
I've had problems with atrial fibrillation in the past 8 years or so, but medicines keep that under control.
So my best to you, and don't get discouraged.
Bill
