Can someone tell me if statins lower sex drive in men?

My Husband is taking them and seems to have lost interest in sex, he isnt sure why, maybe could it be the drugs? he takes simvastatin.

Yes, statins can lower libido. Cholesterol is essential to hormone production and hormones regulate our sex drive so there is a direct connection. Could be why there are so many prescriptions for Viagra, Levitra, and other male enhancement products. I wish you well.

And blood pressure medicines can have a profound effect also.

Sounds familiar...

Been bothering me too, reduced libido that is... Hope to kick the Simvastatin soon... I am off of my Atenolol, and supposed to drop Plavix in June!!!

The statin was not mentioned, but at my 6 month review I will request a trial period backed up by lipid testing to assure that I do have my cholesterol under control.

Exercise is what I really need... Love my biking, but in Reno Nv over the winter there just isn't much biking to be done, except for on the indoor trainer.

Time will tell... but I hope your husband does what it takes to get off the Simvastatin. I have never been a fan of "additive medication" where we just dump the pills on the patient and don't really get around to the root cause of the issue.

I've always had a problem with high cholesterol (hereditary), and last year my total was 319. My Doctor gave me a prescription for Simvastatin and I told her I wasn't going to take it after reading up on statins on the internet and how they effect your body, especially your liver.

So I found some supplements

to take and after taking them for the last 6 months, my cholesterol test came back a few weeks ago at 234 total. Wow, great, I'm so relieved...

I take 2 heaping tsp full of flaxseed meal mixed with physillum powder (found at Walmart) every morning and same in the evening and mix it all up in a glass of water to make like an orange shake...it gets thick. I also take pantothene every day, and was taking beta-sitosterol which is a plant sterol before that. Something is working...and working very well.

So if you ask me, I'd rather take something natural that agrees with my body, than put a chemical in there that causes all kinds of side effects.

Just wanted to let everyone know there are other options out there.

Sylvia :)
