Unfortunately, yes. Once you contract HPV your body will retain the virus. However this does not mean that you will be dealing with symptoms your whole life. Most people's immune system works to keep the virus asymptomatic. Only a small percentage of people have recurrent problems with HPV and go on to develop cancer from the high risk type. Low risk genital warts can always be frozen off, surgically removed or addressed through the use of various pharmaceutical agents.

Do you mean a colposcopy? My ex had one done so the doctor could do a biopsy on a sample.

A colposcopy is an examination of the cervix (or vagina) using a colposcope. I think of it as a fancy pap. You will be in the stirrups, the doctor will swab your cervix (and/or vagina) with a weak vinegar solution (similar to the vinegar you have in the kitchen). It makes abnormal cells on the exocervix turn white. After swabbing the cervix the doctor looks through the colposcope on (I think) 3 different magnifications. The doctor can then biopsy (called pinch or punch biopsies) any abnormal cells. The biopsy is then sent to pathology. During the colposcopy examination, the doctor could also do an ECC (endocervical curettage) to scrape the cells in the cervical canal. Those cells are different from the cells on the outer cervix. The only nonsurgical way to sample the cells in the upper cervix is with the ECC.

When my doctor did the colpo she didn't take any biopsies. My outer cervix was fine. She went ahead and did the ECC. It is painful, but only for a few seconds. And I am SOOOO glad the doctor did that exam! I would go through it again if I needed it (but that is another story).
