If you think it was a recent infection and your not having any signs or symptoms you can take a test now although it may come back negative or low positive and then be retested in 4 months this way it will give your body enough time to build up the antibodies to be detected if you do indeed have herpes or if you just want to wait the 4 months. The blood test to request is an IgG type specific.:)

not sure if i was infected or not, but wanna know, and 4 months is a long time to worry lol. but either way, its just a blood test? so say i had sex today, and i go tomorrow, it could say negative but actually be positive later down the road once my blood builds the antibodies for it? ...bummer

Yes that is true...it may be negative since your body hasn't had enough time to build up the antibodies..and yes its just a blood test.. if you develope lessions then you should goto the doctor to have them cultured.

Just curious do you know that the person you had slept with has herpes? Is that why your asking? I am going to provide you with the transmission rates below.. this should help ease the situation a little when you see how small the chance is (but I know it is still a chance)

Here are the Female to Male transmission rates

If you have 100 couples where the female has HSV 2 but not the male (these figures are over a year) the odds of female to male transmission are if you do nothing other than avoid sex during an outbreak 4 men out of a 100 will get herpes in a year or 4% If you do go on a suppressive therapy then it drops to 2 men out of a 100 in a year or 2% and if you use suppressive and a condom the chances are 1 man out of a 100 will get herpes in one year or 1%.

Male to Female Transmission Rate

If you have 100 couples where the male has HSV 2 but not the female (these figures are over a year) the odds of male to female transmission are if you do nothing (other than avoid sex when there is an outbreak) 8-10 females out of a 100 will get herpes in a year or 8-10% If you do go on a suppressive therapy then it drops to 4-5 females out of a 100 in a year or 4-5% and if you use suppressive therapy and a condom the chances are 2-3 females out of a 100 will get herpes in one year or 2-3%.

The valtrex and transmission study stats are based on having sex 2 times/week.

i guess this is kind of anonymous so i'll tell the story.. sorry for any crudeness involved.. i'll keep it as clean as possible, i dont know for sure she does or not.. strong possibility, .. i was being careful, did not use a condom. was just playing for a little while, but couldnt take it anymore, penetrated for less than a minute, close to, but no longer than, until she climaxed, then i felt that was good enough, cuz i was kind of freakin' out.. so i withdrew and cleaned up.... but now i'm kind of trippin... those rates are reassuring because i saw no signs of outbreaks on her, but of course, i havent the trained eye for that, and again of course, i cannot see inside ya know? so... *sigh...* i'm scared.. price i pay for being stupid tho right?

Outbreaks are tricky but you should always use precaution but i know sometimes you get caught up in the heat of the moment.. also remember even using condoms does not protect you 100% against herpes since it is spread from skin to skin contact not through fluids.. Not trying to scare you .. just educate:):)

I think you will be fine.. just try to relax.. I know I know.. thats easier said then done.. but you'll drive yourself nuts if you keep trying to figure out if you have it or not .. especially with the 4 month window..

thanks for your help. really. i think i'll be fine. but i will check it out in 4 months, would just hate to spread to someone else between now and then.. and lets be honest, a 4 month abstinence is just not physically possible, but i will for sure use protection, tho like you said not 100% safe gaurd, but ill be doing my part at least..

again, thanks for you help :) have a nice evening
