I am currently taking 40mg of simvastatin.
Recently had a test and here are the numbers.
total 203
ldl 110
hdl 80
trigs 65
doctor says that with 40mg of simastatin my ldl should be a lot lower
and that I have to watch my diet. I realize the total should be less
than 200 and the ldl less than 100, but are these numbers really that
bad?
The blood test also shows ratios or tc/hdl ratio and ldl/hdl ratio - both say
below average risk!!
What's the truth here????
Thanks.
Marie

Hey Marie,
I'm no expert but I wish I had those numbers. I have to laugh when I read this board as people try to tweek their cholesterol and doctors keep pushing that number to keep people in a med frenzy.
When I found out I had type 2 diabetes in 2005 my triglycerides were at 2100 and I just used niacin, curbed my diet a bit, and exercised 4 minutes a day. After about 3 months my triglycerides were down to around 300 but still a higher than normal cholesterol reading.
In May of 2008 I was hospitalized with a pancreatitis attack and my triglycerides were over 3500 ( guess I really enjoy my food and eating ) :D
Once again I watched my diet for about 3 months after my 10 day vacation in the hospital.
I turn 51 this year and last month my triglycerides are back at 1508 with highly elevated cholesterol. So once again I am back on the Atkins diet, supplementing with 1500 mg of niacin and 2100 mg of high quality plant sterols (which nobody seems to mention here and is a great help).
AND ;) the whole point to my story is I am alive and enjoying life.
I would never ever recommend anyone to eat and abuse their body like I do!!!
But I just really hate to see so many people in a panic when the doctor says their numbers are a little high. I am glad to see most people are wary of statins at least.
Whenever possible try and find natural solutions and don't let the doctors drive you crazy - take their advice but take it with a grain of salt - and like you are doing now keep checking with your peers.
Hope this helps and I am sure others will give you better adice than me.
sincerely Paul from Chicago
