I've been confused for years now. I was diagnosed bipolar 17 years ago and because I was young, I took their word for it. Through the years and various dr.s I've seen it's always been the same diagnosis. As things got worse for me I decided to research bipolar. For 8 years now I have not believed this is the correct diagnosis. I do not have manic or hypomanic episodes. I found a tdoc who told me I also had BPD. Finally, something that sounds like me. I meet 8 out of the 9 criteria and was satisfied with this diagnosis though upset about still being diagnosed bipolar. That was the first dr. I ever trusted. Well, he moved out of state. I started seeing someone new who says I do not have BPD but guess what, bipolar. Is it normal for somebody to not know that they have bipolar? I know myself better then any dr. but find myself questioning this now. Should I keep searching for that 1 in 100 dr. I can trust or give up and let them tell me I have something I don't think I have?

Personally I find bipolar appears to be very popular. I think that it is a catch all at times and the insurance companies will pay for it also. Keep in mind like MDs, some of the tdocs are great and some just have the paper on the wall. If you are not comfortable with their opinion then question it or get a second opinion. You do have to feel at ease with them, so that you can share enough so that they can help you.
